AppleTV Model: 2021 4k (the newest one)
ok, so i got the new AppleTV 4k and found that whenever i play any 4k video its dark. like the movie was shot at night. i have tried re-encoding it and didn’t make a difference unless i down code it to 1080p.
i can play any and all 4k video just fine on my other AppleTV 4k (previous model) and i looks and works just fine.
I am experiencing the same issue. The same 4K video that plays in “dark” mode plays perfectly on my iPad via Plex, so I’ve narrowed the issue down to a possible tvOS issue.
Same problem, weirdly enough when I open the app switcher (double click TV button) the video looks normal, but when I re open the app it’s dark again.

Edit: this only occurs when its a 4k hdr file. Regular 4k works fine. Note: my tv does not support hdr but if I play the 4k hdr file on the native plex tv app ( the one on the samsung OS ), it works

I have the same issue on my AppleTV 4K 2021 edition in combination with a Denon AVR-X2500h. I can change all the settings on the ATV but it still plays dark.
However, when I select “Use old player” in the plex settings, it plays with decent colors, but crappy quality.
Anyone that has any idea?
Yeah same issue here, had to use infuse for the time being in order to play 4k. My TV doesn’t support HDR either however Infuse has no issues playing it.
Plex needs to sort this out!

I find it amusing that a client such as the apple TV is just being ignored like this. A massive problem such as not being able to play 4K should be addressed ASAP?
Instead users are left out in the dark, not even knowing if there’s a quick fix or plex might be working on deploying one.

I have a 4K HDR tv, appletv 4K 1st gen and both Plex and Infuse. Plex shows an error message in playback infos that it doesn’t support Http, hevc and hdr. Infuse is slightly better less dark.
I’m here as well with two new Apple TVs that both do the same thing with plex. Newer content, usually 4K HDR, plays dark as hell when downsampled to 1080p. Can’t believe so much time has passed without a dev saying anything?!?!?

I have not experienced the issue described above. My 4K UHD movies are all saved in MKV format. I have the new 4K AppleTV and my plex server is on a Synology 916+ NAS. My tv is a Sony 65" 950H 4K TV. All my Plex 4K movies play with same lighting and image quality as from the 4K bluray disk.
Agreed. I have never once seen this happen.
