I just wanted to thank you guys for taking the time to do this on your own. I have a feeling many of us are waiting to see what comes of it. I’m not sure how Plex management can’t understand what turning the Pi into the ultimate energy efficient media server would do for sales? I’ve given up on trying to understand Plex’s decisions.

Hi All! New Plex Pass user, but I investigated Plex back when the app (client) was $5 (circa 2013 if i recall). Anyhow, been using RPi 2B and RPi3 devices, for media servers (OSMC and LibreELEC) since that time with the purchased MPG2 and WVC1 codecs enabled. There were things i didn’t like about those setups but I NEVER had play back issues like i have with Plex. I’ve done some digging and found that the HW codecs are not currently used for the RPi. But everyone is talking about the RPi 4. Why not the RPi 2B or 3 models. And if 64-bit architecture is the limiting factor, may i point out the RPi 3 model uses a 64-bit processor architecture. Anyhow, i voted up the RPi 4 HW codec feature request, but if i’m going to have to buy something new, i’m leaning towards the NVIDIA SHIELD for roughly twice the price. But i sure would love to see the RPi support grow in the media world.
+1 for hardware transcoding on RPI. Given the energy cost quadrupling I’m in the process of decommissioning my HP MicroServer Gen 8 and replacing it with a couple of RPI 4s. I’d very happily add a third RPI to run Plex rather than do without or switch to another solution.

I had no idea the Pi’s had hardware encoders. This would be amazing to have working in PMS. I have been very tempted to move my data into a multi-bay USB enclosure, and run PMS from a mini PC for power efficiency. I would definitely do it with a pi 5 if we had HW transcoding.
Later found out that the pi 5 lacks any hardware encoding, and the quality of the pi 4’s encoder is pretty bad. Probably not worth the effort if the pi foundation isn’t committed to the feature into the future.
Hardware accelerated decoding/streaming support on the Raspberry Pi 4 would be a great addition. Then people could set up small cheap $35 Pis as media servers and the built in hardware decoding could do the heavy lifting.
count my vote in aswell… I mistakenly assumed this would already be implemented so i spent extensive time troubleshooting lmao.
