The only reason it to use the 9600k thats been on my shelf for so many months
I bought a used i3-8100 to get me going and while its working great, I could use the extra 2 cores in that box …
Ah. The extra cores. Thank you. I have been sitting back on the i9 series at this point knowing intel has something bigger up their sleeve.
Can I assume that the i5-9400 is also in the group of cpu’s affected? I upgraded my PMS from a J3455 (with hardware transcoding was doing a descent job) to an i5-9400 running on Mint 19.2. I have been pulling my hair out why hardware transcoding is not working. Is this the source of the problem and any update on when the problem will be resolved?
All -9xxx family CPUs utilize Intel’s new driver (iHD) which is not part of the current PMS distribution.
Is this driver issue only on Linux and if I move PMS to windows will I regain HW transcoding?
No, because The same problem is now present there too.
The updated transcoder is nearing completion. It will have the new Intel drivers installed with it and this problem will be resolved.
I am following this, I just installed the i9-9900 chip Friday and have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why Plex has been buffering so badly…
Please let us know when the update is out.
What was changed in the 9th generation intel chips that is causing a problem? The specs list the same Intel UHD graphics 630 so I wasn’t expecting any changes, will there be any performance increase compared to previous generation chips?
While I don’t know all the intimate circuitry details, it appears the internal ASIC address / ports used to access it, as well as the communication protocol. have changed.
This change was bound to occur as the video bitrates climb higher and higher.
With the -9xxx chips, Intel apparently decided to implement per their new iHD driver protocols which does make produce-family sense. It’s the logical next step. Following the -9xxx I would not be surprised to see a whole new numbering system for its processors all of which are based on the iHD driver.
Does the newest transcoder update (forum exclusive for now) enable hw transcoding on the i9-9900?!
I don’t know as I don’t have a 99K nor have I had the opportunity to review the technical details.
It’s easy enough to download and try, true?
It does for me!
Where do I find the latest transcoder update?
Is a stable PlexMediaServer Version already released with it ?
There are several threads now on this. Forum Preview of the transcoder.
It is Pre-Beta. It is Engineering’s work-in-progress. A post-alpha / pre-beta form.
I am running Linux Mint and have tried all beta releases and finally see HW Transcoding on my 9th gen intel cpu ( Version 1.16.7.1574)
