Has my plexserver been hacked?

Hi, my plexserver (version 1.25.5.5492) running on TrueNAS 12 (using a FreeNAS 11.3 release) is making calls to IP 250.255.255.239, which my router blocks because it is to an “unknown country”. An IP lookup says it is a static IP address with no other information.

Is this a valid Plex IP destination address, or has my plex installation been hacked and some malware is trying to “phone home”?

Any info would be appreciated.

That’s a multicast IP address, used by Plex for detecting, among other things, UPnP routers and network tuners on your local network. It is not generally harmful and message related to it can be ignored.

For what it’s worth, this address is not routed to the public Internet.

ok, thanks. It certainly looks like a special address. Surprised IP lookup didn’t mention this.

Strange that it’s looking to go out the internet port if it’s something for the local network. I guess my router isn’t differentiating this. I mean why would you be looking for UPnP routers on the internet?

Plex Media Server isn’t. That’s likely just naive reporting on the part of your router.
