HD Home Run with or without trans-coder?

NETGEAR RN626X - 6.9.3 (Linux 4.4 w/ BTRFS)
Plex Media Server 1.13.4.5251 w/ Lifetime Plex Pass
Broadwell-DE based XEON 2.4GHz quad-core w/ HT 4-core/8-thread - 6980 passmark
8GB DDR4 ECC
2 x 10GbE Ethernet

10GbE lan, with two 10GbE ports using link aggregation for a 20GbE run to the NAS device…

Fire TV in the theater room, Smart TV, and Fire 7 tablets/iPads as Clients

Looking for a recommendation on a network TV tuner

  • HD Home Run Extend (hardware transcoder)
  • HD Home Run Connect Duo (no hardware transcoder)
  • HD Home Run Connect Quatro (no hardware transcoder)

According to:

The RN626X can do software trans-coding but not hardware… Will I benefit from the hardware trans-coder in the Extend model?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have a 528x and homerun quattro.

I do not have the extend, so I cannot speak to how well it works, but I would have got it, if it had 4 tuners.

I do like the 4 tuners of the quatro, I don’t usually max out all 4 tuners simultaneously however it does occasionally happen when multiple family are watching and/or recording different shows at the same time.

My 528x can manage the on the fly transcoding, but I really wish the quatro had the built in transcoder. Your 626 should have no problems with the on the fly transcoding either.

One of the things on my todo list is to handbrake all the existing files down to lower quality/size x264 encodes.

So in my opinion, for you it comes down whether or not you expect to need more than 2 tuners.

Or I guess you could buy additional extends if you need more later.
