HDR Content washed out on 1080p TV with Nvidia Sheild...

I’m starting to acquire some HDR/4K content into my library but I cannot get my non-4K tv to cooperate. Sames goes for my PC if played through the web app. VLC seems to have problems playing the files as well but I don’t a lot of codecs installed on this machine.

Playing on a Nexus 5X Phone via Plex App shows proper colors.
Playing on older TV via ChromeCast also shows greyed out colors.

What am I doing wrong here?

You need a TV that supports HDR to fix it. They have talked about making plex be able to remap colors for non HDR TVs, but nothing yet.

This will come when Nvidia updates the Shield to Android Oreo. Tone mapping is the technical functionality you are seeking.

My “Wife Approval Rating” is pretty high right now. I wonder if I can swing a new OLED TV without too much hell. (My wife does the finances. I just work and play)

Would also like to see this. I also have a mixed 4K and 1080p TV situation in the house and with the now pretty straightforward ability to rip UHD discs, I have started purchasing those instead of standard blu rays. I have Shields at every end point.

Are we sure there’s no way to do this in the client app? Plex Media Player on my hackintosh is doing the tone mapping fine (client side). Given the long delay for Oreo on the Shield, I’m starting to doubt whether it’s coming at all and would hope that a solution that doesn’t have that dependency would be available.
