[HDR Metadata Passthrough] - Plex HTPC for Windows

Exactly

Nope. Dolby Vision is a different topic. DV passthrough is not supported in Plex HTPC, as it is not supported by mpv. DV tone mapping to SDR works with Plex HTPC, however only when the mpv.dll is changed with an upstream version. (my first post mentions where to get a different mpv.dll)

I will probably update my first post regarding Dolby Vision in the coming days. I´ve stumbled on different things caused by Dolby Vision being present. => mid playback "[vo/gpu-next/libplacebo] Spent 98.917 ms translating GLSL to SPIR-V" cause frames to drop · Issue #12221 · mpv-player/mpv · GitHub

Can you please post a log? What settings do you have enabled? Does HDR work with your machine outside of Plex HTPC? (= toggle the HDR switch in the Windows settings)

Many thanks for explanations. I’ll try to do it this coming weekend.

Commit player/command: Added ability to scale overlay. by gbooker · Pull Request #10713 · mpv-player/mpv · GitHub is now finally merged into the upstream mpv code. Thanks! No need for special mpv.dlls anymore - any shinchiro build now has the necessary bits needed for GUI to show up when having HDR passthrough enabled.

What about the Dolby fixes in ffmpeg? Don’t we still need our own builds for that?

The Dolby issue is not touched by the linked commit, so yeah the need for our builds is still there… (But now only ffmpeg needs to be touched, mpv can be pulled directly from source)

OK I worked out a couple of weeks ago that I didn’t need the mpv-plex stuff anyway so this just confirms that

Will probably try Windows 11 sometime soon…

I removed the auto-close timer on this thread so it shouldn’t need to be bumped again in the future.

I am using Plex windows app (not HTPC) on Windows 11. Would this apply to me?
For my setup I leave the HDR setting enabled in Windows. The files seem to play fine and look as good as the native app on my LG OLED. The reason I like the PC app is because I can passthrough TrueHD / Atmos as well as use PGS subs without transcoding.

Nope, Plex Desktop does not have the “fix” that is needed for true HDR passthrough. (at least as far as i know)

Tried Windows 11 on my end - it seems to work as well as Windows 10.

ive gone back about 50 posts, i’m on win11, Plex HTPC, and use the ‘passthrough HDR’ option in the video settings in the application

is there still more mpv nonsense that needs to be done, or has all of this been incorporated in to the HTPC app?

The settings found in Plex HTPC should be fine now. Activate them and you are good to go. The mpv.conf just helps on “forcing” things but not needed for this scenario anymore.

refreshed the first post…

I looked into a fix for the 1 dropped frame every 35-50 minutes problem. In my case I could fixed it by tweaking the HDMI clock settings with CRU. Watched Avengers Endgame in 4K HDR with metadata passthrough without a single dropped frame! That’s what I call “perfect playback”!

Let me know if I should write a how-to!

Could be worth a separate thread and then I can link to in the tips/tricks thread.

Yeah, it probably be better in a separate thread. I will do so! (when having more time…)
Thanks

So just to confirm, these HDR passthrough changes are no longer needed in Windows 11 Plex HTPC? I watch using a Samgung G8 OLED Monitor.

Only the settings in the Plex HTPC settings gui are needed. Adding things via mpv.conf can help sometimes.
