Heavy performance issue playing 4K HDR remuxes with release 8.12

Sure we could use infuse. But I like the Plex app Overall better than Infuse. Additional I dont want to change between the players. So I and other may do something to help to improve the app. I dont blame Plex for hiccups during playback. I think Dave has already shown that they do their very best to get bugs out of the system. I everone just said nevermind just use Infuse the main app will not improve …

I completely agree and would love to see this and other issues resolved , but the reality is the core issue on Apple TV has been going on for a very long time.

A couple things jump out at me as being non-standard for that file you shared…

  1. The Color Range is pc when it should be tv. This means the file was oddly encoded to the non-standard 0-1024 color range instead of the standard 64-940.
  2. The Level is 5.2 instead of the standard 5.1. I don’t know that the Plex app on Apple TV can handle Level 5.2 given 5.1 is the standard for UHD Blu-rays. I’d imagine this could be tied to the non-standard color range.

Where did this file come from?

Next time I have playback issues I’ll see if these attributes are there. Apple TV detects the color range OK- playback just stutters.

Regardless, these files played back fine on Apple TV a few months ago, and playback without issue on Android and PC.

What’s frustrating is the constant requests for sample files.

Literally grab any high bitrate 4K 24fps HDR MKV and you’ll experience issues.

It’s not hard to replicate.

To play devil’s advocate, it’s definitely not so simple as being easy to replicate as I don’t have this problem with 4K 24fps HDR (and/or Dolby Vision 7) MKVs. I’ve ripped my 200 UHD Bluray’s and they play fine 99% of the time on the Apple TV Plex app.

Though unrelated to this thread, I do have a other issues with the Plex app, just not this one (eg lip sync).

Are these Remix rips or encodes?

I cannot play about half of my Remux 4K HDR 24fps content. Doesn’t seem related to bitrate as some higher bitrate files play and lower bitrate files don’t.

They are full remux rips (via MakeMKV) with no encoding. I may have had an issue or two in the past but nothing in the past year or so. I have all my software up-to-date.

Can’t confirm! I have 50 MBits files which are playing fine and have problems with 10 Mbit files

Interesting for me is that direct stream for me works but direct play not. So the video and audio stream are fine for the mpv player. I even tried if it is mkv related but m4v/mp4 doesn’t work either :frowning:

Interesting for me is that I have one whole season of a series where every episode will stutter. So it is something the player don’t like. It’s not an encoding error.

Additional and this makes this so difficult the people in this thread are talking about different problems…
