Help with 4K HDR HEVC content on iOS

Does anyone know why 4K HDR HEVC content has washed out colors on an iPad 2021 9th generation but on iPhone 13 it doesn’t?

Both are playing direct play on a local network and when I look at the specs on Apple’s website they both support HEVC/HDR.

Would you be able to make screenshots with each device at the same point in a film to help us see what you see? I don’t have that exact model iPad, but fwiw my iPhone 13 and my Mini 6 gen both looked the same once I set the brightnesses about equal when playing 4K HDR HEVC. I tried two different films.

To make a screenshot I press the power button and one of the volume buttons at the same time.

Here are screenshots from the two devices and then a screenshot from my Plex Dashboard of the content direct playing:

That definitely looks like a color space issue from the screen shots however, your iPad supports everything up to and including Dolby Vision in HEVC like you said. Very odd.

Maybe other people who have an iPad 2021 9th gen can corroborate this.

Have you tried deleting the app, shutting down the iPad completely to Power Off,
then booting it back up and installing Plex for iOS again? It’s a long shot but maybe
something was cached.

I’d hate for you to have to debug this over the holidays in the hope of getting things working.
Sample files and logs take a chunk of precious time to do well.

I tried to uninstall the app, hard restarted the ipad and it didnt look any different. someone on reddit stated its because the iphone has an oled screen and the ipad doesnt.

I connected to my Plex server from the Infuse iOS app and it looks significantly better. Even on my older iPad 6th gen the HEVC video used to stutter and it doesn’t anymore. Wow
