so quick question, when am i going to start seeing same quality lower bitrates with hevc that we were told would happen once hevc was released. because at the moment im seeing identical files with hevc and avc. they are same quality and bitrate the only difference is hevc has a fraction bigger file size. with on the fly transcoding and optimized version transcoding there is no difference between them so whats the point in using hevc
Regarding HEVC encoding bitrate.
Yes, currently the bitrate calculation is the same.
HEVC encoding was just added.
We will refine moving forward.
It’s my hope that you’ll be able to set bitrates or quality values for each of the encoders (AVC , HEVC, and AV1)
This is part of the prerequisite work being done.
hi chuck, is there any eta on this yet. just want to know if i should keep using handbrake or if its worth waiting for this
Plex never releases timelines for new features, capabilities, etc. Last minute issues can always arise which can delay the rollout.
Plex has said they’re getting “close” to a Forum Preview (aka pre-beta) for the updated transcoder based on FFMPEG 6.1. That’s about as definitive a timeline as I’ve seen from Plex.
Once it is out we can see how well it works, if there are any new features, etc.
Not sure I would expect too many tweaks/adjustments to the current system, especially if the work cannot be carried forward to the new transcoder.
Changes are also necessary on the clients. This was mentioned when HEVC Encoding was still a Form Preview. I might have missed it, but I’ve not noticed any such changes mentioned in the release notes for the various clients.
