Hifiberry Digi+ vs HDMI to Toslink Splitter?

Hi,

Not strictly on topic, but I am not sure where else to ask.

My old TV has no optical/digital out while my also old 5.1 A/V receiver has unoccupied toslink inputs which I am currently not able to use with Rasplex, and no HDMI input.

I was thinking that I would buy a Hifiberry Digi+ and wait for it to be supported by Rasplex for video, in the meantime using Squeezelite for music from it, but I’ve just discovered that HDMI/SPDIF audio extractors exist at about the same cost as a Digi+, e.g.

here

Is there any reason why I shouldn’t just go with the extractor? Something to look out for? Do they degrade the HDMI video signal that the Rpi can put out? Is the audio the same quality as it would be from the Digi+?

Thanks!
