Well, I think the concern is that as Plex thin down some of the side projects in favour of content aggregation as the way forward, more and more will get thrown out.
Plexamp, HTPC, Podcasts, Webshows, PVR, Photos, Personal media and potentially, even PMS.
Will Roku accept casts from devices? Or if not, maybe the TV on which you run Roku will accept casts. Just mentioning that as a possible solution. In other words, if you adopted a specialized podcast app that runs on your phone (poketcasts.com is my personal favorite, but there are lots of apps out there), then you could bring up a podcast on your phone and cast it to the TV. Thatās what I do when I want to listen via the rich speakers on my TV (Iām running Chromecast with Google TV on my TV).
But then I may not be taking into account your particular requirements for listening to podcasts. Anyway, casting to your TV is something to consider.
That does seem like the current trend ā especially with the release of Discovery. The one Plex feature I really use is PMS and if that goes, then my whole reason for using Plex also goes.
Iāll bet Plex is maneuvering towards an IPO at some point as the go-to streaming aggregator (then forcing ads and/or forcing monthly subscriptions) ā looking for a huge mass audience of users who really could care less about PMS ā so Iām not optimistic about the very long term future of PMS ā in the meantime, Iām enjoying it and I just hope that if Plexās support for PMS fades, some other startup will fill the gap and I can migrate my library to another personal media server.
Yes, to your analysis! As I mentioned elsewhere, you might like Pocket Casts ā I run it on an android phone that Iāve dedicated exclusively to listening to audio while puttering around the house (Pocket Casts for podcasts and Listen Audiobook Player for audiobooks) ā the device is on a lariat around my neck and tucked into my shirt pocket ā I taped a bluetooth media button to it so I can pause/play, etc. eyes-free ā what a nerd I am!
I also run Pocket Casts on my iPhone for listening while Iām out and about. The app syncs across all devices you run it on.
While Iām at home, I sometimes cast Pocket Casts to my TV to take advantage of the TVās speakers.
Yeah man, I saw your post and I think Iāll have a look. I actually do probably 60% of my podcast listening on Windows, so not super enthusiastic about the prospect having to have yet another monthly subscription to do that, but at least the sub is cheap enough to give it a go for a month and see if I like it.
Ah! Hadnāt thought about Windows ā which is odd because Iām a huge Windows user and fan ā typing this on a Windows laptop. I just donāt listen to podcasts via Windows and, in a very egocentric way, forgot that everyone has their own particular ways of consuming media, including via Windows!
I do use Pocketcasts via a web browser on my Windows laptop, but not for listening ā just for managing my account and for uploading stray mp3 audio files to my Pocket Cast cloud storage for subsequent listening on my mobile devices.
Good news ā I just checked, and Pocket Casts sez:
āPocket Casts is available as a desktop app for Mac and Windows 10.ā
Not sure how good those apps are ā havenāt tried them. I hope theyāll support their app on Windows 11, too.
I feel normal and was maybe expecting, Podcast experience wasnāt that great on Plex tbh and couldnāt see better development nor bug fixes, so it was wise to let it go to put resources elsewhere.
Personally have been using Spotify but there are lots of worthy alternatives depending on your needs.
I am really angry at the moment. I used this feature regularly and am very sad to see it go. Especially with the news about its discontinuation coming so shortly before it is deactivated!
It just seems very hypocritical of PLEX to propagate the new discovery feature with the selling point that you donāt have to use multiple apps and have everything in one place, while they are doing exactly the opposite with the podcasts.
One reason more not to use the new discovery feature, which I did not want and will not use. Because who knows, at what point that will be sacked? It is easier for me, to keep my favorite shows in the respective apps.
Plex is the way I listen to podcasts on my Sonos system, and when Iām away from home I can listen to the same podcasts on the Plex phone app., It is the only app I use for podcasts.
Canāt wait until my refrigerator manufacturer sends me an announcement that theyāve discontinued the ice dispenser functionality that was included when I bought the fridge because theyāve decided to focus on other things.
This is so disappointing, I paid for a lifetime plex pass because I really liked where they were headed. I mostly use Plex for podcasts and PMS. Plex podcasts may not be the best way to listen to podcasts, but itās the way I do it for the sake of simplicity, using Plex for all my media in my laptop, tv and phone was so convenient.
Iām not interested at all in live tv and I highly doubt Iāll ever use discover. Iām afraid theyāre loosing perspective on what users want from Plex, and I fear future changes.
This is an extremely dumb decision. And, at the very least, you could make it easy to export things. Many folks would not be able to figure out your cryptic instructions. Perhaps instead you should have just made it auto export into a music library. Youāre forcing me to like plex less and less - which is unfortunate.
