I have a library for sports that I store my video files in but an annoyance I have is that Plex autogenerates poster art and background art which often come from the middle of the event and contain spoilers. Is there a way to either not have the screenshots generated for the events or else have them generated from the very beginning instead of the middle of the video file?
FYI, Plex server is on Win 7 and Plex client is either Plex Web, Android or Roku (most common) - thanks.
Agree. My first Plex DVR recording was an NFL game, and poster clearly showed 3rd-quarter score. Not helpful.
There was, and probably still is, a feature request to allow the user to choose a limit as to where in the videos the snapshots are taken. My preference would be five minutes. I also think that the user should be ably to choose by library to completely turn off the snapshots.
However Plex would have to provide a check box some where and maybe even a slider type control and that would mean choice for the users and Plex knows we poor little users cannot handle choice. It is just too much for our poor little brains and Plex has taken that burden from us.
Also it would over tax Plex’s defenseless and overworked programmers and make the maintenance too complicated for them. At least that is one of the excuses Plex gives for not adding and even removing choices like this from their programs.
I hope they reconsider this but I am not really holding much hope. I have become used to the annoyance and can usually exercise my selective inattention so as the only thing I see is the title but I should not have to intentionally avoid seeing the snapshot.
BTW: On some clients, like the web interface, there is a list view that only displays the names of the videos and that, for me, would be an acceptable alternative. However some clients that have the list view display it with a huge poster on the right of the currently highlighted show and that kind of defeats the advantage of the list view. Also many clients do not even have a list view except when using a playlist which should be unnecessary just to display a series of shows as a list.
The choice of where in the video to take the snapshot or even a hard coded choice of something like five minutes is, I believe, the best we can hope for.
After reading around on these forums a bit, I found a solution that works enough for me while I wait for a real solution. I put poster.jpg and background.jpg files into folders where I have individual video files. If I have video files all mixed together in one folder, you can drop copy the poster.jpg and rename it to .jpg and the background.jpg to -fanart.jpg then no more spoilers! It does bloat the file system up a bit and I have to remember to make the files but at least I don’t need to worry about being spoiled if I do it…
