How to play 5.1 music?

Hi

Simple question; how do I play 5.1 music with plex on my Nvidia shield TV?

When I look at the web dashboard it says that the shield plays surround flac but my receiver says it only receives 2.1. Since my receiver has never failed me yet and that it works fine with 5.1 movies my first guess is that the issue lies with plex.

Some guy on the internet says that plex don’t support 5.1 music but that can’t be true, can it? If that truly is the case I would love to hear a reply from staff why that is because in my uninformed ears that sounds… strange.

If it doesn’t work with plex I would appreciate if anyone knows a different way to listen to surround music with my shield from files stored on a nas.

I don’t think its Plex I think its the Shield that has removed this support. It will also play everything as 48/16. Most concerning for audio lovers. If you have a multichannel USB DAC you might try this. I can get 24/192 thru USB but only in 2ch, but my USB DAC does not support multi channel so I cant test 5.1.

That’s interesting. The Shield will do 5.1 and 7.1 surround music with Kodi.

Edit: It looks like it’s Plex that just won’t do it. See here: Why no support for 5.1 surround playback?

Definitely plex. Other apps do this.

Kodi does have fairly extensive audio controls, especially in expert mode.
I can only presume Plex doesn’t want to go down that path in order to keep things simple, clean and resulting in a lot less support.
