How to stop Plex from changing the titles of my movies?

Every time I update my library to add new titles to my movies section, Plex is changing the titles from what I have labeled them to be. This is especially frustrating when uploading movies from a series (All of the Godzilla flicks for example) and I want them labeled and listed in a certain way and order. Is there any way to stop this? “Locking” the title in does nothing.

Not sure why the lock doesn’t work for you - I have all the Batman movies and changed the sort name for each, hit the lock button (and clicked the save button when I finished), and it’s stayed that way through every refresh/update. What version of Plex Server do you have?

Version 1.5.5.3634 – the most up to date version.

The lock works on everything except for my title. The sort title, release date, rating, etc, all actually remain locked in. I did notice the latest update did away with the “update library” button (which I don’t like) and it now reads as “Scan Library Files.” I may even be doing this entirely wrong by clicking it. What is the appropriate way to update the library?

It’s still the same action, just named differently now. When I add a new movie I click the Scan Library Files link.

1.61 is the latest Plex Pass version. I’m running the 1.6 hardware decoding version. I just tested changing the name of one of my movies, then doing a library scan, and the name stuck. As a matter of fact, it took me a bit of work to change it back, haha!

It appears it works on some of my movies and some of them don’t. This is the most confusing thing. Before the update I never had this problem.

That’s pretty odd, working for some but not others. Figure out two movies - one that sticks and one that doesn’t. Then, set them both to original titles and do a library scan - verify the names are back to default. Shut down the Plex Server application, wait one minute, start the application, wait two minutes, edit both movies, do a library scan, and see if the one changes back. Wait 30 seconds, then gather the logs and post them here so we can take a look at them. Also put in your post the names of the two movies you changed.

I deleted the library altogether then made it again. It APPEARS to have fixed the issue for now-- we’ll see.

Turns out that didn’t work after all. It’s gone right back to changing some titles but not all… SO FRUSTRATING.

The only way your going to fix, list how you have named these files. Screen shot, type out. Check with IMBd how they list it.
Also list how you have set up agents in PMS settings. Example;

This could happen for several reasons:

  1. Non-Compliant file name - Plex keeps trying to re-match it.
  2. An MP4 file with embedded name in Title Field.
There could be other reasons, but those are the most popular.

Solutions:

  1. Bring file name/structure into compliance.
  2. Drag Local Media Assets to the bottom of all your Agent lists under every tab for Movies and Shows:

Plex would love to think they have this ‘lock’ thing worked out, but they don’t. It’s only reliable if you use Compliant file names and Folder structures. I never have a problem with it and apparently @kegobeer-plex doesn’t and it’s a fairly safe assumption he’s using compliant file names and structures - I know I am.

As far as ‘the other reasons’ a full set of log files will probably lead to the root cause fairly quickly:

Drag zip file to a message window and drop it.

I had the same issue. Once the naming convention was corrected the displayed title still reverted back to the “old” title when I scanned the files. I found that if you click on the title and go into the detail screen (Directed by, Written by etc.) The title would refresh to the updated one. It’s almost like a cache has been emptied.
