Many other sites support hitting “f” to toggle fullscreen in their web player. You can hit backslash currently, but since “f” doesn’t seem to do anything, can it be added as another shortcut option for toggling fullscreen?
Existing players that support hitting “f” to toggle fullscreen include:
In a world with different languages I can understand not picking “f” as the keyboard shortcut for full screen. I don’t know how Youtube and Netflix deal with internationalization of keyboard shortcuts. I do believe that picking something cross-language like “\” is a cop out to keep from needing to more deeply internationalize.
Or now that I’m searching it appears that neither service seems to internationalize keyboard shortcuts. So maybe Plex is doing something they believe makes sense to them or to be different. Either way it’s annoying.
“/” is not much better. On the german keyboard for example you can only write / when u use shift + 7. Why cant i just configure my own hotkeys? that would be very cool. But please, atleast add the F as a fullscreen button…
This definitely needs to be a thing. I’m just glad that double-clicking the video at least activates/deactives fullscreen like other video players. That’s Plex’s saving grace for now. But, future support for the “F” shortcut needs to be considered, if not the idea of a customizable shortcut.
Consistency between video players would be nice in itself, but that consistency becomes much more important if you’re using another type of input with limited mapping capability or real estate. I use a steam controller if I’m not at my desk. It’s not that big a deal in my case as I have it mapped so holding the left grip switches the mapping of the Y button from ‘F’ to ‘F11’, but it would be much more than a mild inconvenience/thing to remember for someone who wants to use a more traditional style remote for their media consumption.
I hit F every time by reflex and I am stomped every time that fullscreen does not happen.
This would be a real quality of life improvement on my end to have F to toggle fullscreen in the web interface.
You dont internationalize keyboard shortcuts, its not meant to be internationalized and also it doesnt make sense.
A hotkey should be the same, always, in all languages. Hotkeys sometimes also dont even reflect what they actually mean in any language. Hotkeys exist so you can press them and have them memorized with what they do. If they change depending on language, this memory is useless and hotkeys in general become useless (kinda).
This has been implemented w/ Plex Web 4.73.2 (currently only available using the hosted version of Plex Web; bundled version of Plex Web in PMS and Plex for Mac/Windows will probably be updated at some point, bringing this feature also to those versions).
Edit:
as of version 1.40.0 this feature is also supported on Plex for Mac/Windows.
