Just as it’s nice and easy to create playlists for movies, I’d really prefer to create folders or virtual shelves. I’d like to create a folder or album or “shelf” for My Favorite Films, Super Hero Movies, Indie Flix, Bruce Willis, etc. I know this can be accomplished with Collections / Tags in the movie meta data but I can’t access this as quickly as I can access New Playlist in the app.
Smart Albums would be great too. Movies starring Bruce Willis in the 90s. Movies directed by females. Movies with at least 90 on Rotten Tomatoes.
The only movie playlist I have ever created is Christmas movies. I can let the movies keep rolling in the background all day. Otherwise, I can’t imagine a real life use for playlists. I think this function could be buried while New Folder takes its place.
Cool. I didn’t know that. That’s very similar to what I’m looking for but I would never watch movies in a playlist. I’m suggesting / requesting smart folders or albums.
Seems like he means sort of being able to save the smart filter in but remain in a library like view when selected rather than a playlist which sort of removes the browsing aspect.
I think being able to make customized hubs (like My Favorites or a conditional filter) that could be added to home screen would be cool. (Not sure if that is what you meant by “shelf”)
So, my point is that it’s super easy to make a PLAYLIST of movies but I would never want that.
I’m asking that it’s just as easy to add movies to COLLECTIONS.
In order to create or add movies to collections, you need to edit the movie’s tags. This is tome consuming and cumbersome on the desktop and impossible on mobile.
Here’s just a couple screen shots for visual to compare Collections and Playlists.
You can now create “smart collections” from the (new) advanced filter. In addition you can manually assign movies to collections using ⋮ > Add to > …
This requires PMS 1.22.3 and Plex Web 4.56.3 (currently only available in the hosted web app) or Plex for Mac/Windows 1.31.0.
Those collections can also be published/added to your home screen (requires a Plex Pass).
