So sad that we need to request new codes for this platform when others just stay on top new tech without asking. Always the same with Plex.

I suspect they are busy with the new internet feed sources. I would hope that someone doesn’t come out with an alternative that strips out all that, and only plays local content as well as Plex used to. That would be the beginning of the end for them. I’ve even seen reports that Plex sometimes won’t access local content without an internet connection, although it would not be needed, for that purpose.

+1 for AV1 support.

+1 for AV1 support. My new Samsung TV supports AV1 natively and I have confirmed this using a flash drive. It would be nice to use Plex instead.

This suggestion isn’t a replacement for supporting AV1/AV01, but perhaps helpful until it’s supported.

Is video from YouTube a primary use-case for this?

YouTube typically encodes video into lots of formats, and serves up whatever version the client requests. Many video downloaders allow you to specify the format to fetch.

An example - with youtube-dl, get a list of formats:

% youtube-dl --list-formats "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ"
[youtube] dQw4w9WgXcQ: Downloading webpage
[youtube] dQw4w9WgXcQ: Downloading js player 1a1b48e5

Download video format ID 137 and audio 251 and combine them:

% youtube-dl -f 137+251 --merge-output-format mp4 "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ"

Or grab the lower resolution but already-combined H.264 + MP4A version:

% youtube-dl -f 18 "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ"

AVC1 is our old friend H.264. It’s confusing to see that in a thread about AV1/AV01, with the similar-looking name.
