[Implemented] Allow "Collections" Tag for TV Show Episodes

It would be great to tag individual episodes for a collection, such as Christmas, or dads favourites, so I can go back and easily watch again.

Voted.
I’m sure it would have been a complicated change, but - considering when the request first started, there is no way it was so complicated that it was not possible to implement this since 2014. The suggestion that implementing an entire DVR recorder, and completely changing the way the transcoder works - was less complicated than changing the database structure for TV shows, is frankly laughable.

I want to be able to put Christmas episodes of TV shows in to a Christmas collection.
I want to be able to put Musical episodes of TV shows (most major TV shows have one episode during their run where the do a musical - like Buffy) in to a Musical collection.

Please please consider adding support, it’s a really important feature.

I only found out today that I can’t put TV episodes in a collection, so I’m adding my request for this feature. I’ve been supporting Plex for years. Why does this have to be so hard to accomplish in a future update?

Voted as well.

Would really like a feature like this

I would vote for this feature also. I avoided using Collections at first as I had all my collections divided into different folders on my server. However I flattened everything out to just Movies, TV Shows, Kid Movies, Kid TV Shows and now I use Collections. They are AWESOME. I love especially using them for Christmas and Halloween. However I really wanted to start tagging some specific episodes of TV Shows that are Christmas Specials or Halloween Specials and found out there are no tags on the episode level. This would be fantastic to add in.

It is so insane on the features found on Movies that aren’t replicated on TV. I want to make a Christmas special collection for TV, like I did for movies but can’t because 6 years after this was suggested they still can’t implement something that should be relatively simple to do vs…skip intro, or live TV on plex. Ridiculous.

So, not a fix, & not a replacement for a good solution, but I have found it to be quite useful. I would suggest, as a work-around, to create a TV Library for just the Christmas episodes, & do Hardlinks to the episode files (it makes the same file occupy 2 locations. Each can have their own name, any edits done to 1 affect the other, neither are shortcuts & Plex handles them well) make a single Collection in that library that everything goes into with the same name as your Christmas collection in your movies library. All thd episodes will show at the bottom of the collection under a TV Shows in this collection subheading.
The consolation I’ve taken this year from having it this way is that with all my extra time because of the current SARS I’ve had time to make holiday posters for a bunch of the shows, so they show up with a pretty Christmas poster instead of the regular one.
If you are interested send me a PM & I’ll give you the details. There’s 2 ways to do it, 1 uses command line, the other is an extension I’ve always done without in the past but installed this year & love because it makes it so easy, no command line needed

Here’s a little tutorial about how to do that if you’re interested:
Duplicate locations for a single file with Hard Links

It does seem amazing that this isn’t implemented yet. If it is being actively developed it could also be used to ‘fix’ the issue around Doctor Who (1963) naming where multiple single episodes in a season make up a single ‘story’. If you could add the single episodes into a collection you could show that collection within the season and therefore show the story.

Maybe in time for next Christmas!

For doctor who I just have the artwork the same for each episode that makes up the story. Normally use the dvd artwork. Someone on the tmdb has added it for the first episode of each story so you could use that to differentiate them. I’m obsessional though and went through the whole 26 series and changed the artwork to match the story art :joy: ( yes I know individual title made way to episode numbers at the end of series 3 but I like uniformity, lol)

This absolutely should be a feature. It would be super useful for things like making a collection of an anime that has multiple series and removing all of the filler

7 odd years later. Still no collections for TV shows. Speaks volumes really.

I’m voting for this and share the disappointment in the age of the request given its clear usefulness. My immediate use case is, as many have mentioned, to be able to filter a large collection of Looney Tunes episodes for those tagged with “Bugs Bunny” (for example).

Doing it “right” is more than just adding a free-form text field for tags, of course. Looking at Music, there is a tag-like field for Genre and that value is used for filtering music through the web tool / UI; ideally this similar feature would carry over with whatever is used to “tag” an episode so searching for episodes that share the tag will be as easy and simple as possible.

Edit: had to rewrite this post after I noticed there’s a much more direct way

You can now create episode based collections from the episode’s context menu:
> Add to > Collection

Alternatively you can create episode collections from the new advanced filter (formerly known as “custom filter”) via the actions Save as Smart Collection or Save as Collection.

This requires Plex Web 4.56.3 (or newer) and PMS 1.22.3 (or newer).
→ implemented!

Edit: closing this thread so everybody can reclaim their votes for whatever feature you’re yearning for
