[Implemented] Custom Collection Sorting - Machete Order

Have to say, I was very disappointed to find this isn’t a feature. Most people seem concerned with MCU mainly, but there are many other movie franchises to be considered. Which makes the fact this feature is absent even more mind boggling.

Here’s a short list of things in my collection I’d love to be able to put into Collections chronologically:

  • Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Underworld
  • X-Men
  • Insidious
  • Alien
  • Fast & Furious
  • The Conjuring / Annabelle / The Nun
  • Star Wars

Some of these films can be put into Collections with ease, but given the vast number of films contained in the above series list, the current workarounds have serious drawbacks.

As it is, I’m forced to use Playlists (which can’t be shared between profiles of other members of my family), or to use Collections as is, but changing the Sort Order so drastically that they have to be hidden from the normal list of films. If I feel like watching one a movie in a Collection on a whim, I’m stripped of a way to find it quickly (alphabetically) from the whole list of films available. This is because I have to “hide items in Collections” to keep my OCD from going insane when viewing “All Movies” in alphabetical order.

I’m all for the “Collection Sort” idea as @jestedsniper described it. Where I would be able to tag the movies accordingly for Collections, and the new settings dropdown for the Collection under “Advanced > Collection Order”. It would be a perfect way to let users to continue using Collections as is, while allowing power users more control if they would like to tackle Chronological Collections.

Please, consider making this a feature.

Another vote for a custom sort order for collections, or an additional sort field for inside collections. Both the Marvel movies and the Star Wars series could use this feature for starters. You can’t name the movies properly for sorting inside the collection and still have them sort properly in the main movies list. Some collections need sorting that is not cronological or alphabetical. Another sort title field for collections would be great.

Has my vote for a customer order. I’m surprised this still hasn’t been implemented. You can sort a playlist why not a collection.

AMEN! PLEASE ADD - Collection Order - by “Sort Title”

Collections - Advanced - Collection Order
Currently only by: Alphabetical or Release Date

This would be SO helpful in Movie Series like Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Tolkien . . .

I would love to have custom sort in collections also, and doesn’t need to be anything fancy just something that doesn’t affect main view. After playing around with making links, of the movies, adding them to collection turning off collection view, etc. I found one solution that works for me with Marvel.

I never sort my main view by release date. However if I change the release date to match the approximate date in the MCU when the movie aired, then I can sort my collection by date and shows in perfect order, my main view sort unaffected. Now true, Incredible Hulk will say 2010 instead of 2008, but I can live with that. In fact I actually kind of like knowing the timeframe the movie is supposed to be in.

I also would like this added to plex, this is something I have been waiting on for a while.

Plus one for this, I would love to sort stars wars and MCU in to chronological in a collection

I would love to see a ‘drag and drop’ positioning of items within a collection to get them in the desired order.

This got my vote just now.

A few of the people posting in this thread have suggested that an additional Sort field be added just for Collections, but that wouldn’t work for movies that are in multiple Collections.

It does seem like it shouldn’t be a major update to be able to drag movies within a Collection to a new order without that changing anything outside of the Collection, similar to how playlist order can be changed, and I’m hoping this feature gets added sooner than later.

Just want to add my voice to the chorus. I would love to be able to set up two Star Wars collections, a “release” collection and a “chronological” collection.

I will jump on this bandwagon as well. This is a feature that should be there and I would like to see it.

Yep I want this as well, mainly for TV shows though, for things like star wars the clone wars (2008) and Firefly which have air date which is different from the proper ordering. The Sort title seems to do nothing for TV eps in a series

This is when it would be awesome to have plex be open source so people like me could build this feature. How can they just ignore this easy to implement and highly requested feature for 2 years?

Came here searching for how to correctly order the MCU movies…I guess I’m leaving here making a playlist instead?

I would take this even a step further with TV Collections. For instance, I have all my star trek movies and TV shows in one collection, where they are separated by Movies and TV show. But what if I want to watch them in aired order and timeline. Especially Next Generation through Voyager, and the Next Gen Movies. Or one step further to include Enterprise, The Original Series, The Animated Series and the Original Series movies, in full chronological order for the universe.
Same would go with my MCU collection with having the TV series mixed, such as Agent Carter and Agents of Shield to have it all run in Chronological order. Some sort of better sorting that is specific to each collection would be great, and shouldn’t be too hard to implement using most database systems, including the one used here in Plex.
Or even for just TV Collections like the Arrowverse Universe, where it makes sense to watch things in aired order, especially with the crossover episodes.

Me too! Come on Plex! This has been a request for 2 years now. Can we get a nice update to organization options? Something similar to the “folder” option for cell phone apps would be great.

Add a new field “collection sort title” if a movie is captured in a collection.

+1 for this, would be so simple to add.

Add a new field “collection sort title” if a movie is captured in a collection.

That wouldn’t work well if the movie is in multiple collections and you don’t need them sorted the same way in each collection.

For example, you may have a collection of several movies in a series (such as Harry Potter), and you want them sorted in the order of the story. But you may have a different collection of a specific director who happened to have directed one of the movies in that series and you want it sorted by date.

Simply adding a Sort By field specific to Collections isn’t enough. It would be better to be able to drag a movie up and down the list in a particular collection and have it apply to that one collection only, and nothing outside of it. This can be done with playlists currently.

It would be nice to have a new row in the edit menu to specify the order number in the collection. A bit like what Calibre does with ebooks.
Until then, I’ll have to write custom names which is not great.
