[Implemented] H.265 - High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Plex Support!

which you get?  i just got a new 4k UHD tv yesterday too (: congrats btw

Picked up the LG 49" 4K Ultra HD 120Hz IPS LED (49UB8200) on sale. The 4k content I find on Netflix and YouTube looks just amazing on this tv. Can't wait to watch a feature film at this quality and hopefully being able to use PMS at some point to do this.

Awesome. I grabbed a Sony xbr 55x850c. It's amazing but I was disappointed to find out at home that the android TV does by gas Netflix installed at all or amazon app have 4k right. Guess there's software issues they are fixing by end of May 2015 they claim. Hopefully it's more truthful than the years and years waiting for plex to add ssl/tls. But watching stuff off a USB (demo videos) is simply awesome. The hvec stuff I tried is amazing. I tried a 1080p with 5.1 that was only 1.8gb in size and it looks just as good as a bluray!

I agree on the 1080p upconversion, I have an LED 1080p in the bedroom and it's only 2 years old as well as also being an LG model and even though it is native 1080p the same file on my 4k TV upscaled actually looks better than on the native 1080p LG TV in my bedroom. I was quite surprised the 1080p video didn't look better or at least as good on the native resolution display. I guess you're probably looking forward to the up-and-coming 4k Blu ray media later this year? I don't tend to buy a lot of movies anymore like I used to and would just rather rent from the cloud but I most likely will at least pick up a few must have favorites just to be able to enjoy the maximum quality available on these new 4K TVs.

However I do have a like brand new $200 Samsung 4k upscaling Blu ray player collecting dust I just don't use. I may have watched maybe three movies on it since I have bought it, so was a big waste of money Lol I think I'm going to throw that on Kijiji later this week cheap just to get rid of it. At some point I'll pick up the new 4k players when they are available along with some tittles.

I am not sure if you know this, but you can play 4k h264 mp4 files now. The file is bigger than h265 but. depending on the client, no transcoded needed and plays back at 4k.

awesome to know!  the question is ... what source has 4k content that is in mp4/h264 (true 4k resolution, not remastered)???

The only 4k sources I’ve seen are in YouTube. My camera can record 4k h264 so my home videos come out looking pretty good, for a cell phone video.

nevermind already answered in another post

People are still posting to this like Plex can't do H265?  I have plenty of TV shows in H265 and I watch them. Do I have the super secret version of Plex that doesn't exist?

Nope it works, but it relies on the server to transcode that content, this is for native support of h265.

Ah, okay, I see. I guess I'm seeing it, because it's transcoded.

The new nvidia shield android tv has hevc decoder so please Plex open up the profile so that it can direct play instead of transcode. The windows app has native h265 now in Windows 10 woot.

Do you know if the decoder is available to 3rd party apps?  Some platforms like the XBox do not allow full access to the decoders.

Pretty sure its opened to everything. No different then any of the other limited decoders included. Nvidia is said to be thinking of releasing a codec pack (more $) for all the other nice codecs people want. DTS-Hd etc.

Do you have a link with more info?

So with the release of Plex Media Player, has this issue been solved? I am unable to test myself until next week.

PMP on PC and Mac plays h.265 directly.
On the RasPi2 it does not since its hardware video decoder doesn’t support it.

Awesome, thanks for letting me know.

+1 for H.265/HEVC support. I’m starting to acquire media in this format (encoded by x265) and it would be nice to be able to play it.
