Hehe, I knew I had to catch you before you corrected that. ;)
You may call it my pet peeve, but I believe a lot of people would surely appreciate if Plex team posted a list of the priorities for features/bugs. For many sensible users the baffling part is not that certain request isn't a top priority, but not knowing when certain things are going to be looked at/into, addressed/resolved/implemented. Publicly readable bug tracker which I've been lobbying for would be one way to solve this.
For the record, I don't feel that my and others request in this thread should be top priority, I appreciate that the developers have a ton of stuff to work on and they work through it in the way they feel is best.
With that being said, i think your post makes a great point. If the devs could take some time to 'address' the userbase and say "we are working on this next, and this is why" etc then i think a lot of people would complain less :)
If I open and play the file in VLC it is crisp and plays flawlessly, when I play the file in PHT (with the transcoding) the file becomes somewhat 'fuzzy' and i can't use the skip forward/backwards function correctly.
Plex HT x265/HEVEC support is out! Thanx Plex developers!
Edit: Tried it. The image is not as crispy as it is when the same file is played on VLC and the playback drops out of the blue or whenever one tries to activate or change the subtitles. :(

PHT doesn't support native playback. It relies on the server to transcode.
If the client does not support the format, PMS will transcode.

Right. For certain formats that PHT doesn't support we request a transcode. The thing is that PHT supports a LOT of formats so it very seldom come into play.
Before yesterday, It would trans-code if I set so in network preferences and would play audio only if direct play was chosen.
Yesterday my PHT (Mac Version) was auto updated and is now playing x265 files even if the Direct Play option is chosen in Preferences.
What you mean is that it is trans-coding even so I set it to direct play?
Thanx :)

Is there a way to turn transcoding off? I prefer how it worked before: if the file was a x265 one it would play audio only (when Direct Play was chosen in Pefs) and I would know that I should leave Plex and play the file using VLC.
Now if the quality is ■■■■■■ I won't know if that's caused by a poor quality file or poor quality decoding!

No that sounds like a very narrow use case that most users would not enjoy.

Really? I have seem quite a few posts from people that say they already encode their media to an applicable format for their primary devices (as do I), so having the PMS decide to transcode media that doesnt need to need to be transcoded is redundant and a waste of cycles. I think a lof of us would enjoy a "disable transcoding" feature.

I was thinking about PHT specifically here. I don't think showing a black screen with just audio playing is a good user experience when trying to play h265 content. I think for lesser savvy users that would be incredible confusing especially when we have the possibility to just transcode it to something to work.
The other issue sounds like a problem in a profile then. The transcoder should be used when it's needed. A specific option to disable it sounds like a hack around identifying why it would invoke the transcoder in the first place.
How about being able to select "Direct Play" and it STRICTLY uses that. Or have a new option "Original File" which under no circumstances will touch the transcoder.
This could be useful in diagnostics as well as stated reasons here. This would sort of put us back to how "Direct Play" used to work if I'm correct.
Just to make it clear, the fact that we transcode h265 even when direct play is selected is a temporary solution until we get native playback of h265, then it will go back to mean just direct play.
But this feels like another issue. Please put it in a feature request in that case instead of continue to discuss it in this thread. And yes we know we want to have h265 native playback everywhere possible, it's definitely on the roadmap.

Thanks for letting us know :) ; I'm just super glad knowing it's on the radar. With some H265 files it's practically impossible to see what's going on during action sequences because of the artifacting that comes as a result of transcoding. Worst is when I'm trying to show off PLEX to friends and they happen to pick an H265 video; sorta creates really awkward moments when the quality looks beyond terrible. >,<
Again, thanks for keeping us in the loop, Tobias, it's super appreciated. :)
