[Implemented] - Multiple Cuts Of Movie

How is it that Emby can figure out how to allow the user to have multiple cuts of a movie and it shows up in the interface in a way you can understand which one is which…and Plex hasn’t gotten this up and running???
For example, by using a file structure like: Alien (1979) - Directors Cut Version and Alien (1979) - Theatrical Version, shows up in a drop-down menu and allows the user to actually SEE the version instead of having to figure out which is which by resolution (which is pretty lame).

Star Wars Episode IV Versions:

  • Special Edition
  • Silver Screen Edition
  • Despecialized Edition
  • 4K77
  • GOUT (2006 DVD Version/Laserdisk)
  • Grindhouse Edition

I like that I have them split into different movies in my library with different posters, etc.
But then I played a bit one version and suddenly my home screen (“continue watching”) is filled with all of these.
This thread is kinda frustrating, seeing how long this has been going on.
I don’t even need those fancy selection menus or anything, I just want my library to treat them as different movies, when I split them.

Hardly the solution we’re all looking for, but for Star Wars, I made it a separate library completely. Did a lot of manual merging and splitting and renaming and using different covers. I tried to use a naming convention to separate the different ‘libraries’ like DSP for the Despecialized and GH for Gridhouse editions. This lets me include some of the fan edits in the same library as well.

Doesn’t change the fact that we all need this functionality, but thought I’d share my workaround.

As we approach the 8th anniversary of this feature request, what are people doing nowadays for this? I have some movies with both 2D/3D copies, and of course the usual assortment of theatrical/directors/extended cuts too.

:joy:

+1 vote for this - I have multiple versions of movies as well and the way I’m currently listing them in my library is to split them apart and just manually edit the titles so they appear in the list how I want them. (3D, Directors Cut, etc)

Haha I just realized this is about to reach 14K views.

Anyway, I just the “split” feature, split out each movie into separate ones, and rename each movie according to the file. I usually change the cover, too.

I don’t know if Plex still shows all versions of the movie on deck as it used to (translation: I haven’t watched the Star Wars Trilogy recently), but that was one of the big problems with this option in the past.

It’s crazy that Plex has not implemented this and this request has been going on for this long! Are you listening developers???

I agree that’s the best solution today. It’s even what Plex recommends. Then I’ll use a Collection to clean up my Library view.

I may also move a series with lots of cuts/editions into another Library, and adjust the Collection and Visible-on-home-screen settings for that Library.

Wow! 8 years since this popular feature was requested. And still with the same problem to handle multiple editions of a movie (theatrical, extended, 3D, 4k…).
Please Plex, take in consideration this request from the community.

I was using local extras for additional versions, but the new Plex Movie agent seems to have ended it, back to the drawing board

As a long time plex user, this feature really feels long overdue, especially nowadays.
Having to split out the multiple cuts and not being able to merge both 4k/1080p versions of movies (while allowing restrictions based on tags) seems so jank, especially when competitors have that functionality baked in.

Well this gets even more confusing when you want to have a 4k library of 4k low bit rate(web-dl), 4k remux, 4k dolby vision. When I select play versions I can see the bit rate, but I cant distinguish the dolby vision, it doesnt always have a higher bit rate than the remux if it would show the file name also that would be great.

What’s wrong with having the alternative version as a Special feature? I have the Birds Eye View mode listed as a Featurette for “Birds Of Pray” So if I want to watch that version I select it out of the special features

I suppose nobody here will say “it’s wrong”… there’s just a bunch of nicer options we’re shooting for

Oh no, I get that, I just saw people saying there wasn’t a way, & felt I needed to add the way that exists, even if a better way would be preferred

tom80H - how much pull/influence (if any) do you guys have as moderator’s to get requests pushed through? Its crazy to me that this particular request to label multiple cuts of the same movie for users correctly goes back to 2012!!

Ninjas have the same 5 votes as all other users (of those, I have 1 on this suggestion). As for actual/official pull/influence that’s about it. I’ll happily annoy people about this one when discussing other threads… maybe occasionally some of that is picked up (at that point we’re talking about guessing and hoping on my end  )

Thanks for the feedback and I figured as much! Plex is great, but it becomes extremely frustrating when feature requests like this have gone on for YEARS. And with alternatives like Emby already having this feature (and others) in place, its no surprise why users feel like nothing is being done and jump ship. I know you cannot please every customer out there but it certainly seems Plex’s focus is not on their customer base but rather rolling out stuff like “Free TV”. How many episodes of Wipe Out, Deal or No Deal etc do they think Plex users really watch??
