have they added this yet if not BUMP. +1
those shorts have a special place in the extra folder look up here how to insert extras in plex Which is not related to this current thread.
Dear Plex,
Please add his functionality.
I paid for a lifetime-pass in order to support a lifetime of graceful media management, and you refuse to even respond to such a popular (and necessary) feature request?
The money I paid was for the lifetime-pass (and hopefully future support), not as an investment for you to become a commercial-laden streaming platform (BTW - LOL at that business plan).
Hear, hear, well said!
For what itâs worth +1. Am going to have to use the extras trick for now but not ideal. Would think multiple versions is a fairly basic requirement now
Same here. This Request was added in 2012! I dinât read all posts and add my thought:
Two Options that should solve the Problem:
Option one: Update the âMultiple Versions of the Same Movieâ function by include the Edition name in the File Naming. Like: Pulp Fiction [Theatrical Cut] (1994) - 1080p.mkv / Pulp Fiction [Extended Version] (1994) - 1080p.mkv and add a Option after hit the Play Button.
Option two: Add the Extra-Type âEditionâ and highlight these âExtraâ in front of all Extras or add a Option after hit the Play Button.
Hope that this request will be heard soon!
*Voted!
The name syntax here might be a problem because the movies are matched based on the name and year together as one unit. So if file names are different before the year in parentheses it currently will see them as different movies. They might be able to redesign that system, but it seems counter productive to try. I would think matching up the movie then sorting out the variations is a better way to filter.
As I mentioned earlier a certain competitor deals with this by using Pulp Fiction (1994) [Theatrical Cut]. It seems to work.
As many of you that have voiced your frustration over this feature request and the complete lack of support and interaction by Plex, I have sent a physical letter to the Plex HQ to see what is going on. Yeah I know that the Plex website says that developers donât divulge what is being worked on etcâŠquestion is WHY? As a paying Plex Pass member (and some of you have even paid for the life-time pass), the complete lack of support and transparency by Plex is crazy. This request concerning how Plex shows multiple cuts of movies is at least 8 years old with absolutely no input from Plex at all. Sure the moderators chime in every now and then, but even they are asking the same question and are left in the dark. How in the world can you keep customers if you donât even listen to them??
I also addressed the fact that Plex keeps putting out this niche stuff like âLive TVâ or the new âPlex Arcadeâ instead of actually fixing or fulfilling requests made by their actual paid members. Yeah the add-ons might be cool and used by a handful of users, but in the end, does Plex developers even see, hear or look at what is being requested?..in this case for YEARS!??
We all get the fact that not every single feature request might get implemented. But at this point, what is the use of even having a âFeature Requestâ in the forum if Plex completely ignores it???
I also addressed the fact that Plex needs to definitely work on their transparency to the customer. Why not show a list of things Plex developers are working on? At this point, one can only imagine that they only develop things that they themselves want to see/use instead of the user community.
Will see if they treat my letter just like they do feature requests like this thread and the whole host of others.
I use all sorts of extra tricks to be able to play multiple cuts and versions of movies of my server, but it would be really useful if Plex had this capability built in - particularly given than my various cuts are often named things like xxxx.1990.1080p.theatrical.cut.mkv or xxxxx.1990.720p.uncut.release.mkv, etc.
I am semi new to Plex over all i am a newbie, but not a newbie to coding I understand that coding âPlay Versionâ and showing the version of what you want, i think there is a simple way Plex could code this and i think it could be done with ease, everyone likes the file names their way⊠i dont think I can even 100% figure them out TBH but here is what my files look like currently code fix Plex could do
Here is my daughters Princess Diaries DVD it has 2 versions (My current)
Princess Diaries (2001) {imdb-tt0247638} - 480p - Special Edition FullScreen.mkv
Princess Diaries (2001) {imdb-tt0247638} - 480p - Special Edition WideScreen.mkv
here would be the FIX for Plex and again i think it would be a easy code.
Princess Diaries (2001) {imdb-tt0247638} 480p {ver-Special Edition WideScreen}.mkv
Princess Diaries (2001) {imdb-tt0247638} 480p {ver-Special Edition FullScreen}.mkv
Plex uses {imdb-tt0247638} (honestly dont know if i even did it right)
use {ver-version here} use â{ }â ver for version so everything after ver- would be in the drop down under play version, so the USER can set the versions they want⊠again i think that this would be a 30min code job on Plex side
This is a feature MANY MANY users want this post is not 9 years old, come-on Plex above here is a simpleway to code in what users want and have wanted for 9 years+ if âverâ is used then {ver-version here} or {play-version here} or even {playver-version here}
Well, in Plex terminology the version is the difference between 480p, 720p, 1080p, etc. for the same video, and the engine auto detects it from the container information.
Perhaps "cut- ⊠" would work for specifying a different directorâs cut.
Perhaps an(some) additional tag(s) as used to define extras could be used such as:
- -directorscut
- -extendedcut
As it is, one could do that now using one of the other tags such as -featurette, with a suitable file name. With dedicated tags though, the Plex UI could present these differently or at the front/top of the extras list.
cut / -directorscut / -extendedcut
Great Ideas, i think the issue with Plex coders would be how to tell the âversionâ of a file the user states, there are to many possibilities or combinations of file names, it would have to be separate so you would need 1 value or defined field so Plex knows a âVersionâ of the movie. Plex could then take the 1 value. so a simple way needs to be done {playver-version here} syntax would work b/c Plex would look for -UNSPLIT- movies and then within that once it breaks downthe filename âplayverâ into the versions⊠Plex would only have to code âplayverâ not the hundreds of different types of versions. bc the variable would be defined by the user.
Managing multiple cuts along side multiple versions is one of the reasons I suggested back in 2018 using sub folders for each cut. Such as âTheatrical Release -cutâ or âSpecial Edition -cutâ. Any folder with -cut on the end would be treated as a different cut of the movie and that name would be used in the interface.
Ideally I would like to see the cuts being listed up front in the main screen so one knows what exists prior to trying to play it.
About 24 days ago, I posted on here that I sent a physical letter to the leadership folks at the Plex HQ. I sent it in direct relation to this post and several others that have gone on for YEARS requesting a feature and absolutely nothing happens, nor does anyone at Plex actually respond. Again we all understand not every single request can be made and they should be vetted. But at this point, like in the example of this post, none of this matters to the folks at Plex and their development team. I never got a response from my letter which is exactly what I expected. Why would they answer an actual letter when they cannot even answer anything electronically!?? (Even sent a message a couple of days ago through TwitterâŠof course no response)
For the many of us that are, and have been paying for a Plex Pass subscription, this level of customer support is beyond terrible. Question is, what is it going to take for the developers to wake up and listen??
It would probably take a competing software to do better on both the software and the customer support side. Of course then it would be too late.
I tend to find that tagging some of the Plex bods into the topic can sometimes get things moving. Perhaps its time to start doing that?
My workaround is to create a separate movie library.
Here is a sample list of libraries
- Movies
- Movies - Kids
- Movies - 3D
- Movies - 4K
- Movies - Extended
Even if I have the same movie across say Movies, Movies - 4K, Movies - Extended they all get treated as separate movies.
Then for example on Movies - Extended on Advanced check âPrefer local metadataâ then if the metadata on the movie file says âx - Extendedâ the title in Plex will be âx - Extendedâ.
Bingo, problem solved.
I agree 100% this is a something a LOT of people want. i like the -cut and the x- as options but the programming side of me has issues⊠you need a way that cant be misinterpreted as another action {ver-Special Edition WideScreen} would be the simplest way , well from a programming side {ver-Special 3D Extended Special Edition}⊠the -cut and the x- could cause issues with plex trying to find the names, could be an issue⊠but using {ver-name} the {ver-would allow a user to input anything they want for a name, again my 2 cents you need a way for Plex to be able to tell that its a version of the movie using the {} would be a way Plex could âsortâ the file name -cut is great idea the issue i see is plex getting it confused with {ver-} there is way for Plexe not to know its a version/cut.
As far as Plex not doing something about this⊠well here is my 2 cent we pay for a product, and I pay for a lifetime pass⊠Plex should look at users/features users want i agree 100% plex needs to get out the Jolt Cola and code this, I think Plex is MySQL based so not hard to add a field/table into the code.
