@kamererhouse Actually Batman v Superman was released on iTunes as “The Ultimate Cut”. “Alexander” had a “Final Unrated Cut” followed by an “Ultimate Cut”. And then you will find “Mad Max: Fury Road - Black N Chrome Edition” and so on. Don’t get me started on Criterion Editions.
@ankushnarula - I know. There’s nothing standard about how they choose to name those things. We’d just have to pick a few common terms and let users apply those to their movies as they see fit. Kind of like -featurette, -behindthescenes, and -deleted are somewhat generic while the actual DVD might call it a “making of documentary” or something.
Special Edition, Extended Cut/Edition, and maybe Directors Cut, seem to be the most common terms I’ve seen.
Here’s sort of what I was thinking it might look like. Could possible move the rating up to the same level as the year if necessary. Or else get IMDB to start tracking ratings per DVD release.
Yes, at a minimum it needs to be more descriptive in the popup where you select the versions. Maybe if it had the length of each file it would be OK, maybe if it had the filename, maybe if it had the differences in the filenames
“Note: This feature is not intended for situations where you might have, for instance, both a “theatrical” and “director’s cut” version of a movie. Likewise, it is not appropriate for 2D vs 3D versions. Those situations are best handled by Splitting the movie into separate library items.”
Still waiting for Plex to give us an answer on this. Splitting the movie versions into separate library items is not what we want. Please see @kamererhouse for a perfect example of what we are requesting.
Hope to see something like that soon!
this would be sweet
This, along with composers in music is one of the things which is holding back plex significantly, You have a new music player but cannot get basic cataloging done correctly. This is basic stuff.
Yes please! Emby has something like this, although not perfect, it should improve greatly for those who have different versions of the same film.

I think this is the correct approach. Allow the filename details to surface. Currently when I click “Play Version…” I see a list of options with something like this:
5.2 Mbps 1080p
5 Mbps 1080p
It would be good to have the filename revealed in “Play Version…” - something like:
5.2Mbps - 1080p - "Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country (Director's Cut).mp4"
5.0Mbps - 1080p - "Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country.mkv"
I hope we get this feature soon. The only way I have to find out if I have an Extended Edition is to look at the running time.

Very clever. That would be great addition to Plex.
My vision for a cuts or alternate versions feature is a little more simple. With the update to collections, it has been easy enough for me to collect together alternate versions but hard to pick them a part in the UI. I think a low impact solution for dev would be to add a new metadata field for the version of the film and then add it to the UI. For example:
To be honest, I may just write a browser plugin to implement this, but I’d really rather have it work on the Windows player too.

+1 That looks amazing!

Very Cool… It often happens that there are multiple versions of a film. this could be a fantastic solution, and it is one of the characteristics that would be fatastic if added together with the possibility of having a single menu on the left for the collections.
I would be fine with any of the versions proposed here but what’s important is that Plex desperately needs this feature, I can’t believe how long it’s been discussed here and not prioritized.
It’s obviously not a priority for devs so I think a lot of these implementations are simply asking too much. All I want to be able to do is have multiple files belong to the same movie, maybe distinguished in the filename in square brackets or something “Avatar (2009) [Theatrical Release].mkv”, “Avatar (2009) [Special Edition].mkv”, etc. Then when I play movie, the popup that normally shows with different resolutions should instead show the bracketed names (ideally with runtimes).
This involves very little UI work on the dev’s part because you already get a popup when multiple versions are detected for a single movie. It’s literally just checking to see if there are square-bracket names on all the entries and, if so, changing what shows in the popup.
It’s so difficult to split apart movies when you have multiple version, Plex continually tries to re-merge them when you change any metadata about one of them, and when you play any of them it tracks the progress against all of them. The trick where you match one movie against Plex Movie agent and one against The Movie Database doesn’t really seem to work anymore, and it only ever worked if you had no more than two versions of a movie. This is a glaring omission from how Plex works and I’d love to see a fix - ANY FIX. Anything would be an improvement over this, and if it winds up being popularly used you could improve the interface to work like some of these proposals later on.

For real. When you look as some of the other stuff they are churning out (news?), I would think Multiple Cuts could have been done in a couple weeks. As a web developer I could probably create a UI for Plex Web in a single day (no clue on the other platforms). I don’t know how much time the back-end logic would take, but I can’t imagine it being extensive since it should be a variation of the way extras work. The hardest part is likely just making a decision on the best visual look of it all.
Was anyone asking for things like a News feed in Plex, or do the developers just not look to the forums for improvement ideas? Maybe with “News” they are trying to set the stage for advertising platform or something?

The devs are too busy trying to add everything and the kitchen sink to Plex to add features their users actually want.

Maybe… but I believe they are working with other companies trying to increase profits. Plex will try to please whoever the other companies are. That’s business. And for us, well Plex can loose us, the 3%-5%. Still 90%(give or take) of people out there they can make $$$ off of.
Ran across this with the new Logan movie and the noir edition
Can someone from Plex please respond to this post? You’ve got a lot of users that are advocating for this feature and it seems to be a simple fix of just adding a few more metadata fields to the “Play Version” function. Can you please move this feature up in the priority list?
