[Implemented] Server-Side Speed Limits/Caps for Shared/Subscribed Users

Yes this would be great

+1

It is sad that this has not been solved yet. Not a lot of faith in Plex lately. But no problem coming up with a media conversion utility.

As a lifetime sub, I’m pretty disappointed in the absence of this feature. Emby has it, why doesn’t Plex? Can we get a developer response on this feature request please. Any info would be great because I’ve been having issues lately with Plex not using all of my available upload bandwidth, and sometimes it maxes out my upload but then drops out to well below streaming standards causing buffering every other second to remote clients.

I don’t remember if the PS3/4 thread had developer activity on it or not. That was the highest voted for feature to come of the forums. and since I don’t allow my users to use that platform, well… I never went into the thread…

Oh yeah… bump (Was buried 3 pages back…)

Is it just me or did Plex sneak this feature in just recently? On the Server settings page, in the Network section, I see a setting called ā€œExternal network upload limit per streamā€ … haven’t tested it yet, but am very excited that this feature may FINALLY be here!

Looks very promising.

I neeeeeeeed this to happen. I no longer see the ā€œexternal network uploadā€¦ā€ option, but am really REALLY hoping it comes back and does what we suspect it should do.

Why? Only reason I could see is not enough codec support, which causes too much transcoding?, but the chromecast and Apple TV have very similar codecs…

My personal feeling is, those game consoles aren’t something I am willing to support. They are for playing games on. Not for media. And I won’t support them within my environment. I make that clear to any of the users I add that stream from me. If they want to keep watching my media they won’t use those clients. I will remove them from the list if I see them. PlexPy makes it easy to monitor what platforms are streaming from me, and who is using that platform.

Maybe I’m a bit jaded in this view, but there it is… I drew a line in the sand and I’m defending it. And since my server is MY sandbox… Those are a part of my conditions for streaming my media. My users either deal with it or they don’t get my media…

Of course there are a few other clients I don’t want to support, but I fudge a bit on some of them. Games Consoles are something I’m not fudging on at all.

@MikeG6.5 you think you’ll soften your view a bit if the universal app is release for the windows devices

hehe, I doubt it… Games consoles are for gaming. Not media or computing in general…

but, who knows… Maybe someone will convince me otherwise… But it won’t be today, and not on the forums…

MikeG6.5 My main client these days is the Xbox One. It direct plays my media as good as any other client out there since I’m already using MP4s.

What’s your beef with a game console acting as a Plex client? I don’t care what client my users have or use as long as it doesn’t cause me excessive transcoding.

I don’t understand why it matters what people use as a client? is it a concern over supported formats/transcodeing thing?

Yes, some of use aren’t fans of transcoding, and the the first two console iterations, PS3 and Xbox 360, were not great and I know the Xbox 360 had some serious limitations. The Xbox One might be okay as @Cayars mentioned, but I have no experience with the PS4 limitations. Hell, there was a period earlier this year where the Android client was crippled by a h264 4.0 limitation before they made that option a changeable setting.

It mostly stems from one bad experience trying to set up a 360 when the app first came out. And the thoughts that a game console is for, well, (dare I say it?) GAMES…

I’ve had a hard enough time getting some of my users doing what I want them to do, and opening up a game console as a client just seems a bit more than I’m willing to personally accept. And as I had a pretty low end device I was running Plex Media Server at the time, I couldn’t support transcoding with it at all. This was a major factor for my personal decisions about gaming consoles…

I wasn’t at all happy to see the PS3/4 app. In fact, with the security issues we had then, I saw that and the Xbox apps as almost insulting to the Plex users as a whole, until those security issues had been resolved. Here we were getting more clients when Plex had issues with security to every PMS device that existed. It left a rather sour taste with me.

In any case, here we are hijacking this thread when I been trying to stop others from hijacking other threads…

We know Bandwidth limits are coming. It’s now a matter of when, and how it’s implemented. And how we can dovetail it with other new features we’ve gotten lately. All we can hope for now is that we somehow get this tied in with user limits, and using Optimized Media to get our users the best media streaming experiences we can give them.

If we get the ability to set individual user limits, can edit the OM transcoding attributes for quality transcodes and can set up OM conversions for our user’s On Decks we have TV shows set up well for a quality stream to them. Movies are a whole different issue that will need visiting if and when this all comes about.

See now I don’t consider the Xbox One a game console per say. I see it as a media console or entertainment center. I might play 1 hour of games per 500 to 1000 hours of video.

I love the menus, voice operation, ability to have Skype (for family video calling), casting, DLNA, YouTube, Netflix, Side Bars, Live TV all within super easy to operate menus again that is voice controlled. If I can’t find the remote quickly when a phone call comes in I can just say ā€œxbox pauseā€ and boom… I personally like it a lot better than say the Rokus.

With Windows universal apps it’s going to be even that much better.

BTW, it’s nothing like the Xbox 360 as far as Plex or media is concerned. I purchased the Xbox One just for Plex. I liked it so much I purchased another one for my X’s house for the kids.

Really interested in bandwidth limits on select users. Need it so my kids can use this from college/other places/mobile without wrecking my damn Comcast 300gb limits.

Hi, I’d like to see this as well.
2 things in general. limit, per user, priorities and BW max.

+1 for this, would be extremely useful
