Feature request: per user bandwidth limits

So it has been nearly 8 months since “Streaming Brain” debuted with a global per stream quality limit and global total bandwidth limit, but no enhancements have been made in that time. Now that the base features exist, I am sure many of us think it would be nice if per stream limit could be moved in to the users → friends → restrictions panel just the same way library access is.

It logically would seem to fit there, since that is where the other restrictions reside. I want to restrict certain users to 1-2Mb/s bitrates, but that doesn’t mean I want to restrict myself every time I’m away from home.

Definitely keen for this. I’ve got fast upload, with friends who have download speeds ranging from 100mb down, to ~5mb down. Some friends I’m happy to stream at original, others I want to force them 2mb. Unfortunately, the ones with 5mb are also the ones that are not so computer savvy, so getting them to fiddle with the settings is non trivial.

If possible, I’d like an option, (likely in the friends / restrictions settings mentioned above), where I can set the max settings per user. That way I can force the people with slower internet to lower bitrates, and they don’t need to worry, it just works!

Yes please. I recently got dropped to an abysmal internet package when I moved and I’d like to prioritize certain users… specifically me when I’m away lol.

This is a much desired feature.

I have max 5mbit upload speed (50 down/5 up VDSL). I would like to limit my friends bandwidth with the exception of my immediate family.

Didn’t realize this thread existed and just made one requesting the same feature. so that’s my bad.

i’ll just copy and paste what happened to me recently

"We need these so bad ,

let me give you an example of what happened over the last week , so i set up 2-3 people on my plex server , set their bandwidth to 4 mbps on their android apps and told them how to use it. ( they cast to a chromecast from their android devices )

Now sometime recently all the apps were updated and all my settings were gone, i only found this out when i had messages saying they were getting buffering, ( they were all trying to direct stream!!!) .

This is BAD, these are not technical people and even finding the settings is hard enough for them.
My workaround was to change the xml file to limit the chromecast bandwidth to a 4 mbps max, so whatever their settings that’s the max they get , they all use chromecast so it works but this isn’t ideal… right now there’s no better method!

Need to be able to set a bandwidth limitation per user! and no , the " limit remote stream " feature is useless to me as i don’t want to limit my own remote stream , some users have 6mbps download so 4mbps is just about handled , mine is 45 mbps so i can direct stream most of my content.
please please!"

This seems like a logical extension of the streaming brain for sure-- I’ve got 3 users and only one of which is on a slower DSL. it would make sense if I could limit that users remote rate on my end instead of asking the non-tech user to change the setting. Friends and family don’t want to be messing with settings no matter how trivial ;/

Im dying for this to happen. I only have 12mb upload. Being able to manage users limits PER USER server side, is 100% required.

This feature has been requested several 100 times. There are easily 20 different threads in this forum, which finally demand an improvement of the streaming brain.

Unfortunately, none of this seems to be heard, as do many other very useful feature requests. The main thing is to build in useless stuff that most users can’t use at all, like all the DVR stuff. This can hardly be used by anyone outside the USA, as the hardware cannot bypass encryption. I don’t understand how such things can be installed over and over again, but the really important things are ignored.

It would be really to be wished that Plex finally concentrates again on the users and not only on his own wishes of the programmers or individual groups. The individual apps also have major problems. When I see that the Android app is already trying out the 3rd player but none of it is really executable. Why can’t you do what others (Kodi as an example) do in years with every version.

When I look at the development of the competition (Emby). Then they care much more about the wishes of the community and concentrate on features that everyone can use (IPTV support via m3u lists, setting the quality per user) and not just a part or just because one of the programmers needs it. I will follow the whole thing for a while now, but if there is not something significant happening this year with useful features, then I think about a change with my 40 users even if then a lot of work and costs will come to me as server admin, but only in this way the service for the users can be improved.

I just cant believe after all this time, all these requests, that something as simple as server side bandwidth controls for remote are limited to global and not per user.

Seriously peevs me off at least once a week.

Putting in my vote - would be very useful.

This feature is really needed.

I have many users who only watch on the road on small screens and they regularly watch with huge resolutions, especially because the apps reset with almost every update, which only loads my line and the server without any added value.

It would be very desirable if you could set a limit per user. The limits of the users are too easy to manipulate and change again and again by updates and the users have no desire, interest or also can adapt this again and again.

Please give the server administrators more options.

Got my vote!

Or even to see what individual users are gobbling up for monthly bandwidth too. Perhaps quality streamed.

I’d love to see this added - especially if it means a setting to Allow/Disallow transcoding on a per-user basis. I have family in Australia with abysmal Internet speeds, who I want to prioritise the transcoding capability of my Plex server for - over those other users who are in the U.K. with good Internet speeds but haven’t configured their WiFi properly (or something dumb like that).

I’d want to disallow transcoding for those with higher bandwidths available, so they can be forced to Direct Play / Direct Stream from me.

My vote too!

I’d absolutely love this.

+1 from me
My upload is 40 Mbps but my server can handle 8 1080p transcodes simultaneously.
In addition to user-specific bandwidth limits, I’d like remote connection TOTAL bandwidth limits as well.

That way I could restrict overall remote bandwidth to 35 Mbps or something like that, to prevent completely bogging the connection out of the house, but leave full bandwidth for the local users since I have about 3-4 people who could possibly use the server simultaneously at home.

At least possible for a response on this? +1 from me.

+1
Hope Plex is working on it!
