Lots of good suggestions here. The single biggest issue for me with my music library in Plex are the disc titles on box set releases. Right now discs can only be labeled numerically, even though MusicBrainz and other services do include a “disc subtitle” metadata field. There’s already a suggestion for it (Non-numerical labels for discs) but it has been there for a long time now.
Quoting myself here since I just found this in the Feature Suggestions which goes in the direction, please vote if you feel the same!
Here is a more elaborate conversation about the topic of similar artists: Music: Lackluster Similar Artists. Options?
This was something that was in my head too, but I forgot to write it down, so I’m adding it! Would be amazing for albums with an extra cd with instrumentals and acapella’s too.
just wanted to thank you for your massively detailed post (one of the best i’ve seen in my 10+ years on here).
just wanted to say that some number of things on here are being worked on at some level (some in the thinking/design stage, others further along). so our interests are definitely aligned in some areas
Wow, thank you very much for the reply! And thanks for the compliment, I really did my best, so it’s great to hear it got to the right people
I’m definitely more a fan of music then of movies, so if you want I’m always down to test some on the Plex Music part, help giving feedback or bounce back ideas. Let me know if I’m needed
@Cinnamon : I took the liberty to flag/highlight the sections of your post for which there’s already existing individual suggestion or which have been implemented (as per elan’s statement).
I formatted the post so these sections are collapsed by default, which should make it easier to focus on the remaining areas:
- Artist picture handling
- Groups, group members and aliases
- Single tracks on artist level
It might be worth to split those in 3 separate suggestions to give users the option to actually vote for them (instead of the full package).
@tom80H Thank you very much for doing that! I made a summary of al the individual posts. (Sadly can’t upvote them all, tho). I also made separate posts for the three suggestions you named and took some time to test the ones that are implemented.
The linked post for ‘’Appearances (featurings, productions, compilations)’’, didn’t really capture what I thought of it. I remember finding a post from @beckfield wayback about that topic, where I also grabbed the screenshot/edit, but I can’t find it anymore, so maybe he can help with a link to that.
So I tested the ‘’Synchronization of track metadata’’ and ‘’Custom Posters Playlists’’ which both worked! The custom poster haven’t load on my phone yet, don’t know if that might take some time to sync or if it’s not implemented yet.
The “Splitting album section” is something I’m really hyped about. It worked for the most which is really cool, but how does Plex determine if something is an EP or a Single. I feel like it uses an external source since folders with “EP” or “CD Single” in the name are not grouped yet, and there is no option in Plex yet to say which type it is. I also would love to see a possibility to spit EP’s and Singles, since there is a clear difference in those types from the music I listen to. Maybe an option with possibilities “group EP’s and Singles”, “separate EP’s and Singles”
Edit: I also want to make a post with small suggestions for the video-section (but those will be small suggestions, since the movie/series part is pretty good). Or a post with an idea for new content. But I always have hundreds of ideas to do, so haven’t took the time to do that yet.
And if you need people to test updates on the music-side of things I’m in a Discord-server with people who listen to the same type of music and also use Plex. I’m still open to test updates on the music-organisation-part and I can always drop it there too and ask if they want to help.
Thank you very much! I’ve added the complete thread to the list

I’m not sure what you mean, but I think you must be holding it wrong.
We wouldn’t put up with it if it sucked as badly as you claim!

For what particular reason do you need multiple copies of albums with different embedded metadata? That sounds rather fishy and hence I do lean towards elan’s initial judgement – not saying we might not be wrong – just not seeing why you would do that to start with.

you are incorrect, we added the “Appears On” functionality which takes care of exactly this if you’ve correctly tagged track artists.

When did this happen? I don’t see this in Plex Web.
I don’t. It seem’s like “show up in each bands respective discographies” is what we’re seeing below.
Use the alternative if it’s better, not for being free/open source. I’m not going to list them here, but there are a vast number of features in Plexamp, especially around sonic analysis, which you won’t find elsewhere.
It’s Plexamp-only.

I’m fine with Plex. It certainly has its rough spots, missing features, and other frustrations, and I’m sure @elan will agree that I’m fairly vocal about them , but I’ve never found anything to rival it. Emby and Jellyfin have features that I wish Plex had, but they also lack a lot of things that Plex has. If one of them works better for you, then that’s what you should do.
The problem of Various Artist albums not appearing in each artist’s detail page is one such issue (and one of my top five). It seems to me the “Appears On” feature that Elan mentioned solves that. I’m not sure why you don’t think so – it’s actually part of my biggest feature request, and it gives me hope that it will be coming to the other Plex apps. Until it does, I can find artists that appear on VA albums via Search. Not the ideal, but it works well enough for me, for now.
For the record, I followed the password reset/reclaim server process with no issues. Not to say there aren’t legitimate causes for some of the problems others are having, but I’d be willing to bet a fair amount of them are just the result of not following the whole process.
