This might have something to do with existing exoplayer issues that Google is currently looking at. Plex restarts new Google TV Chromecast - #154 by DaveBinM
Very much a current issue. Appears here that the Plex dev’s are ignoring it like all other Nvidia Shield issues. I guess they aren’t confident on Android development.
yes happening to me as well, downgraded my Android box & Phone to an earlier version and perfect again
This is a serious issue, Plex devs please fix this quickly as I am getting bombarded by tech support emails to my family
Also seeing this behaviour - very frustrating.
is… is it better now? for the first time in weeks I probably played 20 videos on my shield pros in the house and they actually worked. Coincidence?
I’m seeing infinite buffering on files when subtitles are enabled for the file. Turning subtitles off makes the file play right away. Try to turn subtitles back on when the file is playing?? Nope, freezes and goes back to infinite buffering. Turn subtitles back off and the file starts playing again. Haven’t tracked which subtitles are being affected but seems like .srt files are the main culprit right now. This is recent behavior. I have a TV series that I was watching with subtitles enabled that I hadn’t watched for a few weeks. Plex shows that I had watched 3 episodes that I know subtitles had worked on, but now, all episodes, including the ones I had watched all refuse to play (infinite buffering) when subtitles are enabled.
Episodes work fine on plex mobile app on phone, tablet and pc, but Nvidia Shield Pro is a no go.
There’s definitely a Plex / Android TV subtitle issue here.
Subtitles on or off makes no difference for me.
I experience this as well.
To debug this, I need to
1- Quit the video that do infinite buffering.
2- Lunch any other random movie or serie (I don’t know why, but this movie of series will not do a infinite buffering).
3- Come back to play the original video and it will work.
It is important to note that I never got this problem with my android phone.
Not any better now. I upgraded to the latest version again, and it is still having the same issues as before. Based on another thread, I also changed the allowed h.264 level to unrestricted, and that did not help either. I can’t say if it is still as bad as it was, but considering I upgraded the plex client, and it died on the very first episode and I didn’t go any further I can say it is still not fixed, but not much more than that.
Chiming in here as well, have tried all of the suggested fixes:
- Disabling Passthrough
- Disabling H.264 Maximum Level
- Resetting Shield
- Downgrading Plex Client
- Force Stop/Restart
- On, and on, and on…
Same problems, I really hope this can be resolved in the next release.
I want to chime in and say that me and all my users using Android apps (I am using Shield Plex Client as are some other users. Some users are also using Built In TV Android Clients) have been experiencing these issues for about 2 weeks.
Sometimes turning to a different subtitle and changing back to the subtitle works other times it doesn’t
do you stream content via DLNA, and plex server is on NAS ?
sometimes, for me i got same…i need to wake up my NAS (disk idle), i go to windows laptop, open my library folder, and after that the issue gone
I was getting this on my SHIELD Tube TV that I’ve since sold. I was debating on holding out on upgrading to the 2019 or waiting for the next model which I’ve decided to wait. I thought it was the Tube TV’s fault, and wouldn’t see that on this one. Hopefully they fix it soon for you guys. I noticed on the Tube TV if that started to happen I could go back and click play again and that’d do the trick to get it to play right away. Def an annoying bug.
Mirroring what others have said here. This appears not to be a server bug, but a player bug that is isolated to Android devices. Through some testing, it appears that the only places where I am unable to play videos are on my Galaxy S10 and Nvidia SHIELD.
The error I receive on these devices is “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”. Looking at the logs, I see an error “Missing X-Plex-Client-Identifier header” for the video request. Was there a recent release for Android that is causing this header to not be included?
For now, I am working around this bug by casting from my Chrome browser from my Mac to the SHIELD itself, annoying nonetheless.
+1 for me - Infinite buffering when opening files on Nvidia Shield TV Pro. I have to go back to the movie’s details page and press play again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Been happening for a couple weeks now.
I commented on another thread that this feels a little like an Exo Player issue. There doesn’t seem to be anything in the Plex client or server logs to point to, but it’s definitely real and seems to be isolated to Android TV client. I’ve seen posts indicating it’s a problem on Shield TVs, Sony Bravias, and a variety of other Android TV platforms.
Same issue. For me if I get the infinite buffer circle I’ll I’ll go back to the previous screen and will turn on subtitles and then play again and then when the show starts I’ll turn off. Works every time. This just started happening to me a month or two ago.
+1 same issue on my shield TV.
Lowering the quality to force it to be transcoded usually lets me view the media but at least half of my media is having this issue.
Started for me a couple of weeks ago.
That’s what I have seen as well. I’m not sure if Plex can introduce a new player in the meantime? I do not wish to transcode my media. As other’s have mentioned to bypass this issue I cast from my iPhone to the Shield TV and the media plays fine in direct play. It’s slightly annoying, but at least I can still stream.
Hoping we can get an official response from a Plex employee soon.
I am adding my reply here to say that we, too, have been experiencing this with our Nvidia Shield. Absolutely annoying beyond all hell. We get this when resuming playing something, or even just playing something for the first time. Usually have to force close the app on the Shield and even then, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
