Hi everyone,
I’m getting the following error when attempting to update to the newer version of plexmediaserver:

Setting up plexmediaserver (1.13.9.5456-ecd600442) …
Failed to enable unit: File plexmediaserver.service: Invalid argument
dpkg: error processing package plexmediaserver (–configure):
installed plexmediaserver package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
plexmediaserver
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I’m not seeing anything in the /var/log/apt.
The only item that may provide a little direction is this in the dpkg.log file:

I’ve attempted to remove and reinstall the application, run the suggested reconfigure and force installation options from:

I’m running Ubuntu 18 - Linux PlexServer 4.15.0-38-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 10 10:58:23 UTC 2018 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have never seen that error but also gave on 32 bit Linux 15 years ago.
Is there a particular reason for running 32 bits? You won’t have HW transcoding if your CPU supports it.

Thanks for the response ChuckPA. I am running a 64 bit OS. I’m not sure if an option for 64 bit Plex Media Server is offered for Linux yet. The update is through the Plex repo.

PMS does exist (and has for some time) on 64 bit machines.

Please go grab it manually from plex.tv
I suspect something with your repo configuration isn’t right.

I first want to make sure your machine is working OK and PMS is ok on it.

Thanks ChuckPA.

I’ve decided it’s time to start a new install.

The machine has been running well for some time until I performed the update several days ago 11/5/2018). The previous version of Plex media Server was 1.3.5.xx.

As suggested, I downloaded the 64 bit version for Linux from Plex’s website. That version did not install and detected my OS version as a 32 bit system - flag #1.

I found the previous version of PMS (1.3.5.xx - 32 bit version). That would not install as well, but had the same “Installed plexmediaserver package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1” - flag #2.

Regardless, rather than trying to repair, I figured it’s time to start fresh on a newer machine.

I suspect the repo was not the root issue, but something with my dist-upgrades of Linux has muddled the detection - that’s why the repo was only downloading the 32 bit version. As a point of reference, I’ve been running the same dedicated plex machine for the last 5-6 years, starting off with Ubuntu 12 upgrading to the next stable release when the new LTS version came out.

Thanks for your time ChuckPA!
