If Gitlab can transform their platform/cloud repository to support IPv6 within a week then Plex can do it too.
Does anyone know if this trick still work? It stopped working on my iphone after the recent app update. Everything started to relay.
The url plex.direct url is still accessible in browser though.
OK It was a mistake on my end, fixed it already.
Seems to… I just installed the update on my phone and everything works as it did before.
btw is it necessary to put the /web bit at the end of the custom server URL?
I can access my server on iOS via IPv6 as far as I can test but then I cannot change quality of the movie. It always plays in original quality. Any idea why that happens? (I have IPv6-only internet without any chance of connecting to IPv4 servers on my phone)
I don’t know why it doesn’t transcode (could be a bug) - but are you sure your phone cannot connect to IPv4 in general? All mobile carriers with IPv6 I know of do NAT64 to reach the IPv4 internet. For example, this forum itself (forums.plex.tv) is an IPv4-only domain, so if you can see this thread, you’re capable of connecting to an IPv4 server.
I’m writing this post on my home’s DSL connection, so my phone can do IPv4 but only when connected to Wifi
And yes, my mobile carrier is starting to do IPv6 only without IPv4 connectivity. Right now they’re doing a slow rollout, so most of their customers aren’t affected yet, but they started beginning of 2020 with this and will probably continue in the future to go more and more IPv6-only. It works fine for most sites, but some sites are just unable to load. Right now you can still opt-out by fiddling with APN settings, but I’m trying to make sure all the services I use and host myself can be reached through IPv6-only internet, too. That should be the goal for everyone, anyways.
Yes I know that mobile carriers do single-stack IPv6 but afaik they all do DNS64/NAT64. are you absolutely sure you don’t have that?
Yes. When I go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ds-check for example I get “Not detected” for IPv4 and it’s very apparent when some websites are flat out not loading at all while they load fine on Wifi. (Namely all websites without an AAAA record.) Of course it’s an anomaly right now, and I didn’t want to pretend like many people right now face the same issue, but I think it’d be a good idea to plan with this in mind.
You should call your carrier about this then, this is not how it’s supposed to work. Either your phone is not using a DNS64 server or you can’t reach the NAT64 server.
I tried that from home, where I have Comcast dual stack, and I also get “Not Detected” even though https://www.ipchicken.com/ shows me my IPv4 address without any issue.
WhatIsMyIPAddress is broken. Try https://www.whatismyip.com/ instead.
The IPv4 address will be the address for your router, and the IPv6 address will be one of the IPv6 addresses for the computer that you are visiting the web page from.
Has there been any progress in supporting IPv6 in Plex?
IPv6 is supported by Plex Media Server. The discussion here is about support for IPv6 in myPlex. It is complicated by several issues, like the lack of being able to set IPv6 traffic rules for IPv6 in many routers. I have it working with OpenWrt, but it was a challenge…
Wouldnt there be a possibility to make this an ‘option’, for the people who would like to use IPv6 more within their network? I have it working now as I run Dualstack, but in the future I think we are more leaning towards IPv6.
ipv6 support please T^T
I would appreciate IPv6 support for Plex.
New broadband internet connections only have IPv6 support and remote access to the Plex server isn’t working anymore because of this infrastructural redesign.
A support for IPv6 would be really nice to have access again.
Just to chime in: After years of enjoying Plex remotely, my ISP has decided no more free IPv4 addresses and has switched on DS-Lite (before a call was enough to get it switched back to IPv4, but now they want to be payed extra). Using the relay is no fun and unnecessary too. With one of the workarounds sketched here ([SOLVED] Secure Remote Access with IPv6 Dual Stack Lite (no public IPv4)) I was able to get it to work, but only for a couple of hours until my IPv6 prefix changed (it does so every night, same as my IPv4 address used to).
Obviously this request gets my vote!
Woah, that’s insane. DS-Lite is a clever transition tech for IPv4, but it’s gross to break native IPv6 by using non-persistent assignments. My first thoughts are ignorance/maliciousness …
+1
I am also suffering under DS-Lite
It’s annoying, but it’s not that horrible. It’s not necessarily even the ISP’s fault, in for example Germany they are required to rotate IPv6 prefixes every few months for privacy reasons. Annoying for self-hosters, but it has benefits for everyone else.
Most applications with DDNS-like features (like Plex) can easily pick up a changed prefix and publish a new synthesized DNS record to its clients (they already do this with dynamic IPv4 addresses), and for other things like webservers/etc it’s not that big a deal to update your DNS records once every few months. Many domain registrars have an API so your servers can do it automatically.
