Is my server Transcoding?

hello

My plex server on windows is showing the Video and Audio Transcoders at work when streaming 4K UHD+HDR to my LG B8 tv, however they are only using 3.5% CPU each…? I’m thinking that my TV is “Direct Playing” the files (which is what I want) as it states its HDR and looks brilliant…but then why are they going through the Transcoding processes? I have an old 3rd Gen i5 with GTX650 (no HEVC support).

I am streaming Blade Runner 2049 over Wi-Fi 5Ghz at about 35Mbps Average, looks great, CPU at about 10% average.

I have read elsewhere on the Forum that my media may not be in HDR? or is that just for Transcoded stuff?

I have ‘Automatic’ disabled and put it on ‘MAXIMUM’ settings

can anyone tell me whats going on? - why are the Video and Audio Transcoding process running at 3.5% each?

thanks

Monitor playback with Plex Dashboard -> Now Playing to see if transcoding.

@ FordGy61 - thanks for the quick reply buddy

I have and it says Direct Stream for Video but Transcoding the audio TrueHD to AAC

however Ive just checked the temp files and right enough its writing the the entire thing in there as I play it? halfway through Blade Runner 2049 and its written 18GB to disk??

this just doesnt make any sense whatsoever to me as my TV can play anything via USB?, nor do I want my hard-drive been constantly written to just to playback a video file…

looks like i will have to go back to Portable USB HDD until I can get a NAS drive as this is no good, wearing down drives when you have it set to Direct Play

…just to add…(for anyone else who comes across this with the same issue) I noticed that when I use my TV to play the file using Plex Server instead of the PLEX app it actualy Direct Streams everything and nothing written to disk!!! - just no artwork and cant change audio over to correct one

guess I’ll just have to use Plex as and when its needed and that its best using your TV to direct play rather than have a 3rd party app mess with the quality in this way (even though you have it set not too)

TV doesn’t support TrueHD, so it transcodes (check specs online).

Choose AC3 audio instead. It will direct play.

…a friend has cleared some of this up, but there appears to be an issue as my TV does support the TrueHD codec, ive just played it on USB and via Plex Server DLNA (not Plex app) and it played perfectly fine.

it is ‘unpacking’ the Audio and Video out of the ‘container’ (MKV/MP4) and saving the HEVC video ‘as is’ while it transcodes the Audio from True_HD to AAC (as Plex does not support this for some reason…even though my TV does)

hmmm very very strange - my TV plays the video perfectly on USB, it plays it perfectly through DLNA using Plex Server - soon as Plex App gets involved it starts Transcoding…

Im glad Ive spotted this sooner rather than later as my hard-drives would be wrecked!

I’ll just use DLNA until I cant get a decent media player and a NAS drive both my TV/Media Player and PC can access - can you recommend a good NAS drive and Media Player unit? (UK)

cheers

…to add to my reply above…
…a media player that i WONT be using Plex on as it will just do the same thing
