First of I know and apologies for brining this up again as it’s been a hot topic for some time already…
I’m also aware that Plex does not support ISO’s for the following reasons:
However!
I would love to see ISO support added even in a limited capacity such as when in the file list (by folder) view mode only. The reason for this is I’ve purchase a fair amount of training material that has been delivered in ISO format (DVD) and some contain files and other structures I would like to keep and not rip out to separate the content… Some also have good links/menus to quick reference content…etc…
I can fully understand the need to remove support for movies and TV series as it really does clutter the interface and experience however I’m hoping a basic level of support could be considered for a users home/training/other video’s…etc…
It would basically be great to have the ability to use Plex to remember were I got upto in each training DVD, I have been using 3rd party players such as VLC that you can drag/drop ISO files to, although it’s easy to use always having to manually find were you got upto and having to pull out the keyboard as a posed to using the remote is a bit of a pain and was hoping could be avoided with Plex
The reasons you want the ISO format is the exact reason in those articles on why Plex doesn’t want to support it, the menu system. There is no good way to stream those. You need a DVD player app which allows you to click on the links in the video. The Plex client apps just have a standard video player.
Thanks for the reply MovieFan.Plex I do understand the points raised above and in the KB articles and just wanted to share the need to trying to find away on supporting mainly training content some how… As one of the really great features of Plex is being able to resume and some training content being many many hours long it’s a great feature to have yet alone not having to use the old keyboard/mouse on the Media PC were I normally just use a remote only.
I’m not too sure on the back end of Plex and the limitations and was not aware it was not capable of showing a DVD menu…etc I was just hoping as VLC, XBMC…etc do it there might have been some way for Plex to support it even if it was in some kind of very limited form such as simply playing the main movie sequentially as we could resume at least (eg, not showing the menue)…etc… having menus would be nice but if it’s not possible the ability to simply play the VOB files on a very basic level would be nice…etc…
Just putting it out there, hopefully someone might have a suggestion or way that might work out.
Plex will recognize and play vob files. Those are just mpeg2 files. If you extract the vob files from the iso and place them in a library, they will work. It’s just the iso format where everything is in 1 file that Plex does not like.
A better alternative is to extract each video into their own file, if the original vob files are not done that way. Then set the files as a tv show type and give each video a fake episode number. This way they are organized. Do a search here in the forum for workout videos. The method used is also good for training videos.
