Issues with remote playback and Samsung TV

I added my mother-in-laws samsung tv my Plex server, so I can watch when stuff when I am there, but have a few questions that I haven’t been able to find answers for.

  1. My remote delete on the library is unchecked, yet I still see a delete button - why, and how to remove it?
  2. Playing a standard DVD seems to play with no issues when I am remote, but blue ray’s always seem to buffer every few seconds. I set the max remote setting to 720 resolution but see the same issue. When I am at home on my PS4 it all plays fine. How can the buffering issue be addressed?
  3. I am not sure that Plex is identifying remote device correctly - Is there a way to confirm a device is remote?
  4. Back to my mother-in-laws tv - I don’t see a way with samsung to change the speed\resolution down, is that possible? I can change the speed\resolution when playing on a PS4, so I assume that feature should be there for all device?
  5. If I optimize my videos will Plex automatically use optimized copies when I am remote? If so, what to do about low volume output on optimized copies?

A: for Q1: detele button you disable from PMS (go to server> Library and untick allow media deletion)
A:for Q3: some players have a option where you can set them to act as a remote player (why you say you are not sure about identifying remote device?) under devices you can see the players
A: for Q5: i assume that once optimized, when you start using a player it might ask you what version you want version want to see and about volume i think you have to adjust it from player (you have to make some tests)

Response to A for Q1: The remote delete option is already unchecked. That is why I am confused when it I saw it on her tv. Unless the application assumes me as the owner, and if that is the case then how is that security issue addressed?

Response to A for Q3: I see the players listed under devices. None of them allow me to see if Plex thinks they are remote or local. Nor do any of them allow me to set them as a remote device. I am suspecting the buffering is occurring because Plex cannot identify them as local or remote and thus tries to push content in the highest format allowed.

that buffer might occur because of transcoding, if you want to see more details about players you can use plexpy (it will show you who is accessing your server, what player and from where ( so you can determine if is a remote or local) i know that on my Samsung tv if i use transcoding start to bufffer

Does she log in with her own account or with yours ?

When I installed plex on her tv it gave me a PIN I entered that pin. I didn’t see an option for her to create her own account.

Did you create a managed USer ? (from what i know managed users can access only local) she might be logged with your account

I just created the user. I will test it when I am their this afternoon, and will update accordingly.
If it doesn’t help I will use the plexpy from GITHUB that you referenced is that

If it doesn’t help I will use the plexpy from GITHUB that you referenced is that ***** yes, that will help you keep a eye on your server

So, I created the user - again when linking I need to add the pin which links them to my account. Then when they log in they select their user… I tested and had to enable transcoding for the HD movie to limit the buffering. However, HD movies still seem to buffer and no way to see if they are playing back at 1080 or lower resolution. Next step I guess I will install plexpy from GitHub to see how the remote systems are being identified.

Installed PLEXPY neat stuff but doesn’t tell you if Plex registers it as a remote device. Can I assume that if the IP is not on the same network that the PLEX automatically marks those devices as remote?

Other questions yet to have an answer:

Yes, about plex marking as remote, so from what i know any player is market by plex as a remote player, unless player supports act as a server (since player that i saw having that option is that from windows store (see image)

Here is what I see for my clients.
No identification when the connect either.

I think I found the setting for marking devices as remote…
Settings --> Network --> Lan Settings.
From reading that setting https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200430283-Network it looks like bandwidth restrictions are not enforced unless you tell it IP’s local or ip/mask… Although no examples are provided… I assume 10.0.0.0/24 is what they want and not the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. I will have to test again tomorrow to see what happens.

This should not be possible. Can you provide screenshots, camera images of what you see?

What speed is the internet at your Mom’s? It could be her download speeds are not fast enough. What type of CPU do you have? If you are playing back a lower bitrate than the original, your server will need to transcode the video. If your CPU isn’t powerful enough, you will get this stuttering too.
  3. I am not sure that Plex is identifying remote device correctly - Is there a way to confirm a device is remote?
Your devices are not categorized as remote or local. The connection is. Your device can be in the same building, but it there is a network issue and it has to go out to the internet and back in, it will be a remote connection. You could also be ay another location, but then use a VPN service, which will then treat the connection as local. The only way to know how PMS sees a particular client’s connection at any time is to look in the logs in real time.
  4. Back to my mother-in-laws tv - I don’t see a way with samsung to change the speed\resolution down, is that possible? I can change the speed\resolution when playing on a PS4, so I assume that feature should be there for all device?
I believe you are using the Samsung Smart Hub app. This doesn’t use bitrate settings but quality settings from 1 to 12. You can get the manual for the specific version of the app you are runnign from https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/71090/download-the-user-manual-here/.
  5. If I optimize my videos will Plex automatically use optimized copies when I am remote? If so, what to do about low volume output on optimized copies?
The Plex client will use the copy that best matches the playback settings. I’m not aware of a volume problem. Can you eloborate?

Orca’s Samsung Smarthub Plex app always shows the delete button, even though deletion is disabled.
Don’t worry, it is not functional if the checkbox is not filled in the server preferences.

Well I did some more testing with the Samsung Smart Hub…
After marking my IP’s as local and tested Plex for Samsung still too much buffering occurred, so it seems that Plex does not acknowledge it as a remote device.

Additional Tests
Then once in the Plex app for Samsung I pressed the (A) button to get into Preferences --> Advanced and set quality to 7 --> Tested with same buffering result

then went back and into Preferences and Unchecked box for Highest video quality and enabled transcoding --> Buffering issue seems to be resolved.

Internet connection Comcast Cable, sorry I did not run a speedtest.net but that will be my next step.

The Plex client will use the copy that best matches the playback settings. I’m not aware of a volume problem. Can you eloborate?

When you optimize videos for Mobile devices the volume is dropped significantly, which is another area that shrinks the file size. When I use a 3rd party program to optimize for mobile, or Plex the volume is dropped, when optimizing with 3rd party software I can boost the audio when the optimization process is running. Ideally, the optimization should not reduce the volume output.

I have not experienced this. The volume has nothing to do with file size, so there is no need to limit the volume. Can you create a small sample of a video you have? Add it to a new PMs library and make sure it sounds fine. Then optimize it and check the volume level, see if it is different. If so, please provide me both the sample and the optimized version and the PMS logs showing this conversion.
