I’ve made use of the Last.fm scrobbling feature for a long time now. However, I just realized that the “now playing” status doesn’t appear to sync to Last.fm. Apps like Spotify are able to do this. Am I missing something, or is this just not implemented with Plex? Is there a planned addition for this?

I don’t think it’s implemented.
Now playing is not used.
Scrobbles are done according to last.fm requirements after at least 50% of the song has been played.
You could roll your own Now Playing scrobbler, using webhooks. But they are a Plex Pass feature and need some more knowledge.
