LG WebOS - subtitle without transcoding?

Hi everyone!

Quick question:
Is it somehow possible to use any sort of subtitles with the LG WebOS app htat don’t force video transcoding?

I’m currently upgrading part of my collection to 4K HDR, and any kind of subtitles force video transcoding, which causes the video to buffer every few seconds and makes the video unwatchable.

I’ve tried a movie with integrated .srt, .vobsub and .pgs subtitles and even extracted and removed the forced subtitles to load them as an external .srt - the video was still forced to transcode.

Is there a way (besides burning the subtitles directly into the video file) to watch a movie with any form of subtitles on LG WebOS?

Thanks in advance!

The subtitles have to be SRT and your audio has to be able to direct play.

nx6, thanks for the quick reply!

So on the subtitle part I’m already ready to roll, that’s good to know.

Do you know what the audio track has to do with external subtitles regarding direct play and/or transcoding of the video and subtitle track?

If the audio has to be transcoded and there are subtitles, the video gets transcoded too to ensure the subtitles stay in sync with the audio.

Thanks again for the insight nx6!

So I guess there will be no other choice than to directly burning the subtitles into the video…

You could also change the audio to a format the LG can direct play. I had an issue like this playing a rip of a movie. The HDR was being messed up because there were subs and the LG could not play the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio. But there was a Dolby Digital 5.1 track also. Simply changing to that allowed the movie to direct play.

I didn’t have a fancy surround sound setup, so there wasn’t any difference in experience from the audio change.

Couldn’t work this out but now make sense. All the new LG TV dropped DTS support so the audio has to be transcoded forcing the Video to also transcode with Sub, was working on my old LG TV but the support DTS.

Have to remember to change audio to a supported format if the video has it, one thing i dislike about the new LG TV’s

Yes, I’m facing the same issue. Need to replace the current LG because the backlight is failing, but getting a new one means no more DTS support. Also I can’t say I’m crazy about the new full-screen webOS 6 launcher.

I have same issue.
Please fix this ASAP.
My Apple tv Can do this with no issue. And my phone and my iPad.
Please please please fix this or you will loose a lot of paying customers.

There is noting Plex can do, this is a LG problem

how do you know that

Because we just explained why this is happening, if you’re been reading the thread?

The subtitles can only be played without video transcoding if they are a format the LG can handle – and this is not something Plex can control – and the audio can be played without transcoding. These two conditions must be met for subtitles to direct play.

I’m sorry to insist.
But I’ve been reading about this for quite a few time. And I just don’t get it.

I’m having the same issue with the webOs
The thing is I believe the video shouldnt transcode.

If I’m playing a file and plex is showing that audio and video is direct playing, than if I turn subtitles on (SRT), it should be able to continue right?
But it starts trasncoding.

I also can direct play the exact same file with the tv photo and video app with subtitles on, and plex can’t.

I know exactly when this started to happen. I just can’t figure out why. Even the files that I have already watched started transcoding.

If the video and audio are able to direct play, then the TV should be able to handle the subtitles directly if they are SRT, you are correct. If that’s not working then there may be an issue.

At this point you need to supply the media info and log files if you want someone to investigate it. Possibly a sample file too if needed.
