I am using the HDHomeRun Extend tuner. My clients are mostly iOS and Apple TV devices. My understanding is that the Extend should be performing the transcode on-board before being sent to clients via the server.
Unfortunately, that is not the effect that I’m seeing. As soon as I start viewing Live TV on any of my iOS/ATV clients, my server’s CPU usage surges up to >85% and stays there until I stop viewing.
My server is an Intel NUC with i5-4250U. Inside Plex Server settings, I have the transcoding profile of the HDHR set to “Highest Quality” per the online instructions.
Any help or clarification is appreciated.
Actually played around with this some this past weekend trying different settings on extend and in Plex to see if I could figure out a good setting for Live TV. What I found was setting the Device Setting in Plex for the Extend to Medium Quality (540p) gave me a good display for Live TV on my iPhone 7 Plus with only 2 or 3 buffering occurrences over a 30 minute time frame.
If your server is transcoding, isn’t that because your clients can’t do direct play? Or, if you’re reducing the quality to your devices, the server will transcode as well to meet the requested quality. At least that’s my understanding. Check your settings in Quality to see what your device is requesting from the server.
