I have been using Plex for quite sometime but have not gone to deep into the technical aspects of it. When I started I was using it on an alpirpose machine, word processing, gaming, etc. My last machine consisted of a 6700k, 16gbs of ram, and a gtx 1080. I recently built a separate gaming machine with a 3600xt, 32gbs of ram and took my gtx 1080 out of plex to put in it. I completely forgot about gpu workloads and and noticed my cpu now hitting 100%.
Two questions 1) Do I just get another GPU and put in the plex machine if so which one would you recommend. 2) Budget does allow for a possible new build, i was looking at the 3900x due to pure power with a lower end gpu. Or would I be better off with and older intel 7700k, 8700k etc and a gpu. Those new 10900k chips are expensive as hell and since i have a separate machine for gaming the new upgrades will be 100% just for plex.
Side note I have not jumped on the 4k wagon I have maybe about 10. My library consist mostly 1080p blurays and TV shows. In home streaming for me is done on an apple TV 4k, 3 other tvs have 4k firesticks. I have a few family memeber who stream to various devices and my internet connection is 940 down 880 up.
I did read that entire thread but since everyone has different needs and I was still undecided I made this post. You seem to think that he can go intel only with no gpu do you think the same would apply to me? Also will there be noticeable improvement or longevity going with a 9900k ove a 8700k or 7700k?
whether its cheaper/better to buy a new/used gpu to put in your current server (or buy a new GPU for your gaming, and put the 1080 back in), is something only you can decide.
or you can go with a budget 7700/8700 system with only the intel gpu, maybe save money and power and probably fan noise.
or perhaps you can find a 1660 or similar fairly cheaper than replacing the 1080, and putting it the existing plex server.
