9.9.16 with system running on class 10 SD and storage on 3.0 USB stick.
overclock is at "high" and HDMI audio edid forced.
wired GE ethernet network
remote control through flirc USB dongle
connected to a 46" LG screen through a Bose Livestyle V20
With that setup I have managed all files playing fine without buffering, cache always around 60MB.
However I recognized that on 1080p I don't get fps beyond 8. Frame rate is always between 7 and 8 with CPU0 on 20% to 100% depending on the movie, cache maintaining at 60MB.
On TV shows at 720p I get fps up to 33 easily on 20-40% CPU0.
Is that expected behavior or is there something I can do to get fps up to 24 on 1080p?
According to the 9.9.16 release thread, 1080p issues could have been introduced with that version. Try the stable version and see if you still have problems.
Did you buy the mpeg and vc-1 license keys for your pi?? The hardware decoding is turned off unless you buy those. It's an easy procedure and could solve your problem.

To clarify, Hardware Decoding for MPEG2 (DVD) and WVC-1 (Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile) is turned off unless you buy the licenses.
Normal x264 and other MPEG4-video is always enabled, no licence needed, and for these types of files the licenses make no difference.
