I use MakeMKV to rip DVDs. With very few exceptions the movies take up the full screen on whichever player. A very small number of DVDs that I have ripped play in a smaller box, not edge to edge. If you play the actual DVD on TV it takes up the full screen as expected.
Any thoughts about why?
Do the black borders appear on the top and bottom,
or on the sides,
or both?
In general, you need to use e.g. Handbrake and crop the black borders from the video.
Then you should see most videos filling up at least in one direction (i.e. either top to bottom or left to right)
hmmm, why only on this select few DVDs and not on all the others? I’ll give it a try.
Not all videos are created equal. Depending on the original aspect ratio of the movie and the year when the DVD was produced, some are encoded with black borders and some are not.
ok, I am referring to a black boarder around the entire movie, all 4 sides, not just top or sides
This should be fixed by cropping the black borders on top and bottom from the ripped video.
It is very likely a rather old DVD, which was produced when 16:9 TV’s weren’t the norm yet.
Running it thru Handbrake did fix things
Thanks
