I would love to have more search and filtering functionality for premium music libraries. I believe that right now search results will find artists, albums, and tracks. Filtering within music only allows Genre, Country, or Collection.
I think the biggest thing I would like to see is to find music by year. It would be great if I could pull up a simple filter of all the albums in my music collection by year. I don’t know if others would find these metadata tags useful for searching, but it would be nice to search Album Artist, Composer, Conductor, and maybe even Comment fields in the metadata.
What client are you using? It’s true that the Plex Media Player preview will only filter by Genre, Country or Collection, but the Windows Player app will filter by Genre, Year, Decade, Record Label, Mood and Synced…
Having said that, I agree that better searching, browsing and filtering capabilities in Plex are needed, along with a broader support for ID3v2 metadata. Being able to distinguish between Album Artists and Track Artists, for example. Plex only knows about Album Artists. These sorts of things have been asked for before, but no sign as yet in Plex.
I use different clients around the home like the web interface on Chrome, and the Samsung SmartHub app. But leaving the house I rely on the iOS version on my iPhone. That in particular is where I’d really like to see my requests come through. I just double checked my iPhone, and yes I can still only filter by Genre, Country and Collection.
When you say “Windows Player app” do you mean the app for Windows Phone? And is your music library a Premium Music Library? I don’t understand how you would have more options from the WIndows Phone app.
UPDATE: Oops, I am some sort of dodo bird, since now I see that if I choose the Albums view, I now have the filtering options of Genre, Year, Decade, and Record Label. And if I choose the tracks view, I can sort by Moods and Rating. Thanks to @gcoupe for pointing me in the right direction.
I would say that my original post is now irrelevant, but I would like to see a few more options for the filters, and I would like to be able to search by the comments field in tracks.
There is a thread that specifically asks for the ability to search by Composer. Please add your vote by clicking ‘Like’ on the first message in that thread.
