Is there a chart or stats page somewhere which what would tell me which hardware uses Plex the most? Like Roku or other devices like my SmartTV? Right now I use a Dune Media Player to play all my content. It’s snappy, fast, and It has served me great so far. I have all of them in my bedrooms and den. I’m starting to get a little tired of not seeing movie information or at least posters. But there are so many options to choose from. I am using RasPlex right now which seems very snappy, quick and choppy. I even tried to the play the 4k version of The Martian and RasPlex knew that so it started transcoding and playing it for me right away. The only thing that really drives me nuts is the remote control situation with the RasPlex. I really wish more work was done with integrating remote codes or something. I’ve tried about 4 old DVD remote controls with FLIR and none of them worked good. Almost impossible to program and when it was programmed I had to be 2 feet away from the RasPi. Any suggestions what would be the best client to Plex? My Samsung TV has the Plex app installed on it and that works fine, so that would cost me no money and I would have a remote control. Thanks, I’m always looking to make things better.
While I have not seen statistics stating usage rates my guess based on the limited sample of people I know is that the Roku family is more used than any other Plex client by a fair margin. The other possibility would be Android if you lumped regular Android devices like tablets, Fire devices and others like the NVidia Shield all together. Other clients may be as good or better than either of those families of devices but the numbers using them I believe is well below Android and Roku.
I use Rokus mainly to this point but I will be getting a NVidia Shield (I hope it will not prove to be a waste of time and effort) tomorrow and we will see how it goes with that more expensive and powerful device.
I have been using Plex for a long time and I know many people that are using it as well and, in my case, everyone I know except two families are using Rokus for 90% or better of their viewing.
I use raspberry Pi 3’s and now the C2 Odroid running OpenPHT (also known as rasplex). I recommend the C2 Odroid if you don’ t need WiFi as they support 720/1080/4K HEVC/h265. There will be a new low cost device released soon for OpenPHT with the same direct play file support but built in WiFi.
Pretty sure Elan has said before that Rokus are the most used. I’m not sure by what metrics though; as pointed out before the android/iOS install base must be bigger, but I’m sure the # of hours of content watched must be higher on Rokus.
