MOVIES....4K vs. LOWER QUALITY

I have been a Plex user for almost a year. I recently bought a 4K TV, and it has the Plex app built in. My question is if I start migrating to 4K content on my source files. will it play on the other 1080P TVs in my home?

if your server is powerful enough to transcode, it will transcode 4k content to 1080.

but even if your server is good enough, generally you should avoid transcoding 4k.

additionally, smart tvs, while fine for netflix/etc, do not handle well full 4k bluray rips via plex due to lack of support for HD audio.

so this can cause your 4k tv on plex to transcode the 4k to 1080 in certain situations.

there is a good recent discussion @ Best hardware to play 4k via Plex server

and also check out @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ for a long detailed thread about 4k and its pitfalls.

I’ve got 4k TV and a handful of 4k films and so far these 59 year old eyes don’t see a big enough difference to put up with the server and network demands that 4k movies require. I’m limiting my media PLEX library to 1080.

Exactly. If you don’t see the difference what’s the point.
That said if the client can direct play, then demands on the server and network are negligible.
