Moving PMS from a Raspberry Pi to a Mac mini

Hello all, recently I ordered a 2018 Core i3 Mac mini to use a light home server and to host Plex. I currently run Plex Media Server on a Raspberry Pi 4. This setup works surprisingly well and can server multiple streams of direct play content without much effort. My reasoning for making this switch is so I can have a more robust PMS, so I can use this Mac as a download server, and to have a machine I can always remote into without having to leave my power hungry desktop on all the time.

I am ok with setting up a new Media server and sharing it with my handful of users, but I would like to be able to migrate the server and not have to change much of anything. I found some information which says I should be able to follow [this thread from reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/c1v3mh/migrate_plex_from_linux_to_mac/?utm_source=BD&utm_medium=Search&utm_name=Bing&utm_content=PSR1 migrate my server from Linux to macOS. But I’m posting here to see if there have been any new developments or things to consider since that thread is 4 years old now. I know this is probably a corner case, as macOS is not very popular in this community, but it is my preferred OS. Thanks for any assistance you can give!

Using a tar file is your best bet (as written)

in both cases cd Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

Now when you create the tar file (as root)

sudo tar cf /path/to/save/file.tar .

It goes from “here (dot)” down and gets it all

On MacOS, the corresponding path is ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

you’ll want a chown -R at the end to match things up after you
sudo tar xf /path/to/save/file.tar to extract the files.

Yes, you’ll need to convert Preferences.xml to plist.
