Multi resolution encoding for low powered nas

Hi!

I am interested in hosting 1080p content on a low powered nas.

I think it is awesome that plex can support preencoded multiple resolutions. However I see little or no guidance on how plex chooses which resolution file to play.

Will picking a subtitle always trigger a transcode?

I see that plex has a built in list of stream bit rates. Can that be changed?

Do video streams have to exactly match the listed bit rates to be picked up? If not what is the criteria?

Can plex clients automatically change bit rates based on connection speed?

Does it decide the bit rate of a media file based on total stream or is it just the video stream?

For example, let’s say I have a 20 Mbps 1080p original with an 8 Mbps transcode.

If I select 12 Mbps in the android client will plex transcode from the 20 or just remux (or stream) the 8?

If I select 4 Mbps 1080p in the android client will plex transcode from the original or from the 8 Mbps version?

Thanks!

Subtitles only trigger a transcode if the client cannot side load and use them. Subtitles used with DLNA / Web / Non-SRT will trigger a transcode.

For multiple encodes, it generally will give you a popup to select what one you want. Aside from that, plex will transcode as needed to match the selected bitrate.

If the file only has a bitrate of 8mbps and you select 20mbps, provided it doesn't have to transcode for other reasons ( container, subtitles or specific codec settings/issues) then it'll direct play the file.

If you select 4mbps quality on a file with 8mbps bitrate, then plex will transcode and squish the bitrate down to fit.

Remuxing is a bit easier, Plex will attempt to just repackage the file on the fly without transcoding.

Also to clarify -- Plex will not monitor in real time your bandwidth availability and adjust the bitrate automatically.

Hrm just to be clear,

If I provide a 20 and an 8 Mbps varient and request 4 Mbps, plex is smart enough to use the 8 Mbps varient as source?

Prolly, but most NAS can't transcode, so it'll sit there and buffer alot trying to, or just up and fail completely
