You can change it yourself, since somewhere mid last year Plex will read the RELEASETYPE (TXXX:MusicBrainz Album Type in id3v2) tag and it will override whatever’s in Musicbrainz. If you tag your release with, “single”, Plex will pick that up with a Refresh Metadata action.
Thanks, that helps a lot. I just tested it by adding “Single” as a RELEASETYPE tag and it worked great. I tried adding “Live” as the RELEASETYPE to another song and it didn’t classify it as a live album. Do you know what the tag types are for each of the other release types?
EDIT:
I found this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/plexamp/comments/ws9qk9/how_to_get_the_release_type_to_work/
This is a comment from user StayStruggling:
MusicBrainz themselves state this tag is constructed from the first main type/format and then one OR MORE sub types/formats. Which makes sense as e.g. ‘live’ is not mutually exclusive with any of the other sub types.
So the question is, does/will Plex support more than one subtype?
Obviously entered as decreed by MusicBrainz, each separated by the semi colon, but how does Plex handle this? Does it accurately follow the MB spec for this tag or once again place artificial restrictions on how it deals with metadata, like only bother with the first one and to hell with the rest?
Discovered something today when I was trying to get Release Type to work. Here is what I got to work for me.
Here is what I have.
It was bugging me that the Radio Nova show and the IheartRadio was not slotted in the live section. In Picard these tracks do not exist. So there is no match available. So they will only show up in the left side of Picard for manual edits. I added the releasetype tag and created it as album;live per the above discussions on this thread.
I did a metadata refresh on the artist at the artist level and then did a album metadata refresh just to be sure and even with this tag and refresh the plex server wasn’t picking up the tag.
Now here is the fun part. I know this album has no match in Musicbrainz/Picard. So just for fun I decided to match this album with something random. So i matched it with walk on water which I know is not the right track.
At this point the track disappeared from my screen.
If you see the original pic I had 7 albums now I only have 6 albums. So I refreshed my browser and plex put the track under the Singles & EPs which is not correct either but it did move.
Now the fun part. I simply unmatched the track at this point and it disappears from the web browser.
I refreshed the browser and vwala plex put the album in the live section just like I wanted.
Test this out on one or two tracks first Be aware I noticed that sometimes this would change the name of the track and then I had to edit in plex and lock the track names, to put the track names back or rematch the album. But it works well for tracks that are not listed in musicbrainz. Point is be cautious and pay attention to the track names. But I did get it to accept the release type by doing this Release Type Shuffle.
Fantastic to see this implemented. Working flawlessly in my collection.
Hold on wait. This hasn’t been implemented. At least… I still can’t manually change what group it’s in?
I just discovered that Plex actually has a “Format” filter, which is used to filter albums, EPs, singles, etc. However, it seems that the format information is not automatically scraped when tracks are added to the library. The format information is only retrieved when you enable the “Group albums by type” option and refresh the metadata. However, I don’t want to use the “Group albums by type” feature, but at the same time, I want to retrieve the format information. It would be great if the format information could be automatically scraped regardless of whether the “Group albums by type” option is enabled.

Came here to make this suggestion. Happy to see I’m not the only one looking for this feature with music. Figured I’d add to this post instead of creating a new one. This was the one I found with the most discussion. Feel free to point me in a different direction if there is another thread with more traction.
I have lots of live recordings that get placed into album and it would be nice to be able to edit/sort this manually on our own. I don’t mind matching to MusicBrainz when available but if it doesn’t match up correctly, to be able to override the category and select our own.
I did start adding and editing more on MusicBrainz to help with this but as others have said, it becomes tedious and otherwise I wouldn’t be spending that much time on MusicBrainz.
Hope to see this coming soon.
The work doesn’t seem complete. At least, I wouldn’t call it user-friendly.
To prevent Plex from overriding local metadata, navigate to the Manage Library settings and select the Edit menu. Under the Advanced tab, ensure that “Prefer local metadata” is checked, toggled on.
I reviewed our conversation from 2022, and I think I know what’s going on.
Follow these instructions:
-
Scan the music library to establish a baseline of its current state.
-
Remove the impacted release entirely from Plex. This can be achieved by moving the release files out of the library folder(s).
-
Scan the music library again and verify that the release has been removed.
-
Update all the files to have a Release Type of
epusing MusicBrainz Picard. -
Add the release back into Plex. This can be achieved by moving the release files back into the library folder(s).
-
Rescan the library, and the release should show up with the proper Release Type.
Good luck, Jimmy!
