Apologies if these questions have already been answered, but I’m a bit confused.

1. With music being stripped from the Android app, does that mean the same will ultimately happen on other apps such as the Roku app?

2. If so, can we expect Plexamp on Roku or will there be no way to access music on that platform?

3. If Plexamp is coming to Roku, can we expect gapless?

4. If we have to access music through Plexamp or another music client on Roku, will we be able to access music videos there? Currently, I can browse the main app via artist and all videos related to that artist are grouped right there with albums, and album tracks with linked videos allow those videos to be played direct from the album screen. It would be incredibly disappointing to lose that functionality and the idea of having to access music videos divorced from the music content is unappealing at best. I appreciate that this is a minority use case, but my library was meticulously built following the structure recommended by Plex.

Many who were beta testers of PlexAmp were eager to ask the same question to only be told that no, there will not be any PlexAmp apps built for Roku and AppleTV. The answer of NO was pretty firm back when I brought it up again a couple of years ago.

Plex has not yet committed to making a music app available on all platforms once they yank it out of the main app. I think we all have our fingers crossed.

I was originally sold on Plex as a great way to manage the media content I already have…

I am not excited about the social/discovery stuff either – but to be fair, Plex has recently put in a lot of work on the personal media front. Every server release has fixes for library management, and they have even improved hardware accelerated tone mapping. Aren’t they also moving towards x265 transcoding support?

Based on what is actually in recent releases, I’m not worried about the future of personal media on Plex in general. I think if they were abandoning personal media they would have stopped making those enhancements a year ago.

I am very worried about some of the details, specifically if I’ll be able to play Plex music on my Android TV in the future. If their answer is “idk just cast it from plexamp on ur phone” then I would be pretty upset. (It’s the same question for photos, though that isn’t a feature I personally care about.)

For now I am giving the benefit of the doubt but I sure would like them to address this issue soon.

The end of music in Plex?

From the blog post: " * 2025: We are planning to expand device support for Plex Photos, while deprecating music and photos playback in the primary Plex (movies & shows) application. This means that by early 2025, the Plex app will be entirely focused on the discovery of movies, shows, TV, and fellow fans." So, that appears to say that by early 2025 we won’t be able to listen to music through our Roku TVs using the Plex app like we’ve been doing for years. Now, I can manage my music libraries …

Thanks, but nothing there mentioned music videos at all…yet they still have a blog post talking about how to setup your library structure for them!

I’m setting the bar low. If they can pull off a full-fledge suite of PlexAmp apps across most clients, w/ MV Library support, then that will be the day I’d STFU about it. The challenge is on them, not us. Them disregarding PlexAmp w/ MV support for other clients such as Roku, AppleTV, and GoogleTV/Firestick devices will be pretty damning.

You’re absolutely correct. I’m sure things have changed since then and the extra rounds of VC money rolling in might help, but I urge everyone to stay on the side of caution.

Thinking about music videos, I imagine they could handle it something like this:

Make Plexamp music video aware (based on what’s in your library), even presenting a list of music videos for an artist…when it comes to play a music video it could handoff the playback to the regular Plex app.

For myself, music videos still play fine in the new app - I’ve always had a dedicated video library setup for them.

I have the exact same opinion as an avide user of music on the plex TV app, thanks for posting.
