Music tracks need genre

+1, would also like plex to show track mood tags. I have my tracks tagged with moods and I there isn’t anyway to see that data and I doubt plex uses it…

Adding more flexibility to the “Custom Filter” in PMS by adding more Track filter choices could be an answer.

Example of new filter names that should be added (that can be red from the “ID3 metadata container” stored inside each music file).

  • Track Artist/Performer
  • Track Composer
  • Track Genre
  • Track Mood

All these new filter can be implemented like: “Track Title”
Filter selection could be: is, is not, contains, does not contains

That way, you can find any music track from any albums where two artists are named. The same way, you can also find any “Jazz” music track form any album, same it the “Album Genre” is “Soundtrack”, or you can find all music form “Beethoven” (composer) form all music album.

This is my #1 feature request.

Also a quick search on “Genre on Tracks” yielded 4 different feature requests that are either the same thing as this one, or would be addressed by this one.

Bump this needs to be added

This would be nice…

Another +1 from me.
Please, please address this. It’s a catastrophic omission on an otherwise amazing piece of software. I really don’t want to have to run Kodi in tandem just to access the genres on my tracks.

Absolutely needed!

My Plex mp3 music library automatically pulls the genres for Albums and Artists (except for “Various Artists”). My FLAC music library only pulls the genre for Albums and leaves the Artist genres blank (requires manual input). However Plex only pulls one genre tag , out of many, for FLAC albums with multiple genres. But no genre tag option at all at the individual track level?!

If I filter by New Wave genre, for example - at the album level - I see a number of my various artist variety albums that happen to include some New Wave genre music…but I have to figure out which ones they are out of all the other tracks. Just applied the aforementioned filter on the android phone and touched shuffle…the first track to start playing was a Classic Rock genre song (very useful /sarc).

Would really like to see the decision making tree that was used to omit track level genres…

Since all votes were lost with the new forum changeover, I have taken the opportunity to rework one of my ID3 tag feature requests into a more comprehensive request for tag support.

This would be a great opportunity to consolidate all the votes that were spread across so many threads before, and maybe get some much-needed attention.

  • 1 for genre by track.

+1 for this!

This feature would be great.

+1 for this too!!!

I am astounded that Plex doesn’t assign genre to individual tracks. Why on earth wouldn’t you? I have “best of” albums that include one or two Holiday songs, and as a result the entire album is marked as Holiday genre plus whatever genre it’s supposed to be.

The bizarre thing is that the Plex internal sqlite database allows for Genres (and Year, also super useful for retrospective compilations) per track, the scanner just doesn’t populate these fields.

Um, wow. Year too? Is it really just a matter of the scanner not populating these fields? If I edited the db manually would they appear in Plex?

They would be in the database, but the Plex Web/apps also need to use this data, at the moment they don’t. The Year filters as far as I can see only filter on album level.

Similarly, track artists are displayed but you can’t do anything with them, for example if you search for an artist, it only searches the Album Artist field, compilation tracks dont show up in the results.

I can only assume it was once decided to do it that way for query speed, but I’m not sure how relevant that is with the hardware used today.

Yeah this is pretty disappointing. New to plex. Basically with no filtering for track level its pretty useless for music.

Agree, just because there is one Reggae song on a Bruno Mars album, the entire thing gets the Reggae tag. They at least need to set some logic that unless every song on an album has the same genre ignore the track genre.

Yes. Genre by album is barely helpful at its best. To be truly helpful, it must be genre by track. Less developed services can handle it, Plex can too. I believe in you, Plex! We have the technology!

+1, make great plex!
