Music tracks need genre

As far as Synology, their new Photos app in DSM7 is everything you’d want and hoped Plex should be able to do. It securely stores and shares your photos on your own storage device. You can granularly share content with people. It supports automatic uploading from mobile devices and syncing of content to other devices. It also supports tagging, searching, and organizing. I was so frustrated with Plex for photos that when I moved to this other solution, I couldn’t believe how bad and behind the Plex Photos was in comparison.

Another currently annoying thing that would benefit greatly from this bug fix (yeah i’ll call it a bug fix), is SONOS.

I use Sonos zones throughout, and Plex is a media service to Sonos so you can play music from it reliably and easily. Sonos itself has an “MP3 library” function that is pretty barebones and has a tough time with large libraries, this is where Plex could shine if they wanted to.

Plex: Please fix/enable direct tag track ratings and genre read/edit/priority for interface and dynamic playlists! You would crush the competition offerings if this was really nailed down.

PS- my heart jumped a bit with the latest server update, I look for [Music] items, but sadly not the fix we needed and just some other bug patch for genre.

wow. it has been 7 year and that this issue is still not fixed.
The metadata from a regular mp3 purchase from Amazon music or iTunes only has track genre (see the music file properties tab under Windows).
Why couldn’t plex just add the recognition of the track genre from the mp3’s metadata?

Seeing this hasn’t been implemented for so long proves to me Plex doesn’t really recognize the value of having a decent music player. Welp, the search continues.

Agree. I have essentially accepted defeat and allow myself to use Plex music as is and have a worse experience.

PS- also Plex why do you put salt in the wounds by (1) having AI scanning of music you hype in the latest email newsletter and (2) having Plex amp exist and not just have one Plex app. I mean, what are you guys doing over there?

A post was split to a new topic: Music Server Alternatives

Plexamp is awesome, I tried it for a month but sadly since the music library organization is a mess, it defeats the purpose. I’d happily pay for a pass subscription if they just fixed this.

This is a must. Think of an EDM track single… When a remix bundle for that single is released, it has multiple genres. It can be House or Dubstep etc. And just by looking at the tracklist on Plex, if you don’t personally know the remixer, you wouldn’t be able to tell which track is the Dubstep remix for example, so you’ll have to listen through them all to find that specific remix. I don’t know what the thought process was for not adding this? If you look at the Tracklist page on plex web for example, there’s a whole lot of empty space between the track title and duration where things like genre could easily be added as a column and maybe even give the option to add other custom columns.

EDIT: There is the “Mood” tag on Tracks but as far as I can tell, it’s useless? You can’t really use the tag to sort tracks or anything.

This is EXACTLY my issue and why I had to stop using Plex for my DJ music collection. That is super annoying because that is 1TB of my music.

Glad to se this topic continuing to get some love. Plex - where are we with this? Will we ever get track level genre?

Almost 7 years later and this simple and much needed solution still has not been added. It is odd that tracks only have mood and not Genre and Style. Might not be the place for it, but I also wish at least tracks if not all the way up had Theme tag as well.

Edit: Also Plex, whatever you are using to determine “Sonically Similar” is terrible.

Please provide a way to create a smart playlist by Genre. This is something basic, and users should be able to do this at the track level. The current method you provide to do this at the album and artist level is useless and very confusing. It pollutes my genre playlists with music from different genres. This is NOT good!!! Please help!!!

It’s unbelievable to me that this simple feature hasn’t been implemented when users have been asking for it for 10 years. PleX could be great for music management, considering it is one of the few players that support streaming AND smart playlist creation. But the idiotic decision to group everything by album instead of supporting indivdual track metadata is a dealbreaker.

I moved all my music to Emby. Now I have working smartlists, intelligent radio mode (plays similar tracks), and downloads work reliably. You need to install a plug in for smart playlists (New Plugin: Smart Playlists 2.0 - Plugins - Emby Community)

They also say you need premium account to use Android auto, but if you start Emby on your phone before you connect to the car, it works fine without it.

+1 On this!

Without track genre the smart playlists are pretty much useless, and this is such a basic function it´s embarrassing it wasn´t implemented from the very beginning.

If I´m making a Hip Hop playlist I don´t want a tonne of rock, pop and soul to end up in the same playlist just because the happen to be on the same CD-compilation.

This thread is 7 years old and the devs still haven´t gotten around to fix it, jesus ■■■■■■■ christ…

We should all send a daily reminder to the billing support email until this is fixed.

You might want to read up on how the feature suggestion forum works (especially the part about no guarantees that suggestions will be implemented). Suggesting to harass Plex into doing something will most likely not increase the chances of a suggestion getting any attention (it might even backfire).

alternatively, you could get the actual albums instead of compilations to solve the problem

It shouldn´t need to be a suggestion, this is such a basic feature that it should have been implemented from the very beginning.
