Nas compatibility spreadsheet not available -- Help available here

To add to Trumpy,

Please be advised, the is no AMD transcoding support at this time.

The only solution with AMD CPUs involves the use of a Nvidia GPU card.

Thanks for the detailed response Trumpy81. Looking at the passmark scores and the costs if I was going to do the TS-872XT I might just spend a little bit more and step up to the monster h1288X with a Xeon that supports QSV.

I’ve looked at the Synology some, but I’m leaning towards the Qnap simply because I own an IT Managed services business and I happen to be a Qnap partner.

could you post a recent copy here on this thread so we can at least download it and refer to it for upgrade purposes… :slight_smile:

I did read… the data file you provided (and I thank you for that too, btw) is still from 2020.

Don’t presume I haven’t read the thread when I ask a question for something ā€œrecentā€. Jan 2020 isn’t ā€œrecentā€. Perhaps you need something more specific because english is a second language for you? OK… I’d like an update more recent than Jan 2020… because I’m trying to recommend hardware to a friend of mine. That better?

Any other passive-aggressive comments you care to make?

How may I be of assistance here?

What is being searched for?

Don’t worry about it ChuckPa… clearly I’m out of line asking questions deemed superfluous or redundant by the forum ā€œninjaā€ here…

I’m the maintainer of the NAS guide.

I’m working on its replacement (new way of maintaining and displaying in light of Google’s recent actions).

How can I help?

And I’m definitely looking forward to that end result. Thank you in advance for your hard work on that effort.

Given that the aforementioned spreadsheet is the most(ly) current representation of the data you had online at this time I’ll send that to my friend who is looking to replace their recently deceased NAS.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

@ChuckPa and/or @trumpy81

I know it’s slightly off topic but why does Plex upload such a important file to a cloud service? A cloud is just another person’s computer! :wink:
Wouldn’t it be better if you create a PDF file and offer it directly to download from the Plex Webspace? Sure it is a bit less convenient to modify but Google Users can’t send abusive takedown requests.

@Fluamsler

  1. We have a commercial account with Google.
  2. We THOUGHT it was safe for our NAS guide just as it is for other documents.
  3. SOMEBODY, who doesn’t know JACK SQUAT about the source of the information, deemed it ā€œInappropriateā€ and FLAGGED it.
  4. Google removed it – Per their policy
  5. In summary –

We’re reviewing and considering ALL our options.

  • Downloading a document means you might have an outdated document
    — Doesn’t do you any good

  • Downloaded copies get proliferated and posted elsewhere
    — Causes confusion and propagation of incorrect or complete info – With Plex’s name on it.

We have a solution which

  1. Lives in the Plex web space
    a. hosted by Plex
    b. controlled by Plex
    c. beyond any third party’s attempted influence.

  2. Easily updated as models are added or removed.

When it’s ready, we will quite proudly let everyone know it’s returned.

OK fair enough. I didn’t thought about the problem of spreading incomplete support documents over the internet.

Sounds awesome! I’m looking forward to this! :slight_smile:
I think the less you have to rely on other services the better. And in-house solutions are usually less confusing than documents hosted on other cloud services.

Thanks for your explanation. :+1:

Hello! If anybody could kindly send the spreadsheet to ****REDACTED that would be appreciated. It is my birthday, please make me happy lol

What can I help with regarding the NAS Guide ?

I’m going to buy a NAS and drives on Amazon Prime day in a few days. I’m considering Synology and QNAP, but there is no telling what will go on sale. One of my top requirements is to use it as a Plex server.

While I appreciate your company’s desire to deliver the best possible solution, withholding the compatibility list is impeding your customer’s ability to purchase new hardware on the fly as sales are available real time during Amazon Prime Day and potentially Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The only thing I can think of that could help me would be to get the complete compatibility list. Unless Plex has staff to monitor Amazon Prime Day and every online retailer during Black Friday & Cyber Monday to deliver on the spot details about NAS devices as the sales are announced.

Why not publish a PDF with a date of publication, link to a webpage that can be updated with new PDFs or other details on where to find future updates. Yes, people will copy it, but with a link directly in the PDF indicating where customers can go for updates, you can be fairly confident that semi-tech-savvy people will click the link to get the latest details.

Questions

  1. Will PLEX please provide a NAS compatibility list in PDF or some other form in time for the 2021 Prime Day sales?

  2. If not, how can PLEX assist me with evaluating NAS compatibility on the fly during the sale?

I was certain there were screenshots here.

In the interim, here’s what I have.

Whenever I export as PDF, the hardware transcoding columns get cut off and put at the bottom (makes an unusable mess). It’s in portrait and not landscape mode even though the spreadsheet is in landscape.

Working with PDF format can be a pain. I appreciate the screenshots! It would help if the heading row was frozen, so it appears in each screen, but I should be able to manage with this.

Transcoding on the X21 series Synology is very disappointing. I assume the issue has to do with their processor choice. QNAP seems to be the stronger choice, but I’ve heard Synology has a better software suite. One option might be to get a NAS for storage and an NVDIA Shield to act as the PLEX server/transcoder.

As the curator of this list, which NAS would you want for a 4K PLEX server? Would you lean towards a different solution?

Thanks!

@Rasmon

  1. On the real spreadsheed, the column headers are fixed . In this cheap tool I have, it does not respect that.

  2. Synology is very disappointing in many ways. If you want a NAS… then yes. If you want an extensible appliance… then no.

  3. I have the, now obsolete TVS-1282-i7-64GB. It no longer serves as my Plex host even though it would be a great host ( i7-7700 is a great CPU for Plex )

Which NAS would I want?

  1. The TVS-1282 that I have but I would only use it as a NAS. I’d get a smaller CPU
  2. Next, setup a NUC8-i7-HVK machine as the Plex server.

Doing this does you a great service, most notibly, you separate the storage from the compute.

When it’s time to upgrade either, the project cost is lower.

If you’re wondering where to put the NUC? That’s easy. Put it on top of the NAS – it’s small enough :smiley:

I have this configuration.
QNAP TVS-1282 is for Plex development & NAS storage .
Production (family) Plex is on the NUC.

You ask which to get? Easy:

  • What can you invest now which you think will carry you for the next 3 years at minimum?
    a. Separating out the NAS part makes that part easy to solve.
    b. The compute part is something only you know and how much you can and do stream.

@ChuckPa

Do you connect the devices with Thunderbolt 3?
What drives do you prefer in the TVS-1282?

Thanks for the great advice! I should have the setup you described by the end of the month. :wink:

I use the OWC 10GbE Thunderbolt NIC adapter (brick).
That NIC is what connects to my LAN where the QNAP resides (also at 10GbE)

Setting up the NAS (e.g. my QNAP) is going to be pricey.

I have 8 of these bad boys :smiling_imp:

I could share my entire setup if you want to see it but you might be a bit overwhelmed.

(No – I don’t do LAN networking support HAHAHAHAHA)

@ChuckPa

Nice drives! Yes, I’d like to see details on your entire setup, if you are willing to share. Thanks!
